I have old Merc with a non-LS diff and a 4.5 litre V8.
The handbook says SAE90 for the diff but I bought Castrol SAF-XO 75W-90 (Synthetic), what do you think? Is it a good chioce?
I live in Sweden so the temperature very seldom goes above 30 degrees Celsius.

That should be fine. At cold temps, the oil will behave like a 75W and once the diff is warmed up, a 90 weight, just what is asked for. The one thing to watch out for is leaks in the axle seals and the pinion seals. If they are old, the syn might creep through. Why not use a regular dino 80W-90?

Oops I didn't know that the synthetic might creep out. Thanks for the info! I was aiming for "maximum protection" since it's a bit worn, it has 300000km on the odo.

XO will be fine. I run syn in all my w123 diffs, without any issues or leaking.

SAF-XO is a great fluid.

I have SAF-XA (IIRC unique to Australia, 80W-140 LSD fluid) in a Nissan Patrol with 305,000km on it and it's fine.

Ahh, thanks - than I keep it.
I belive that w123 and w116 diffs are pretty much the same.
