I have an 05 Ford Explorer w/4.0 V6, 4x4 3.55 open diffs w/AdvanceTrac and the owners manual calls for synthetic 75/140 in the rear and i was wondering if i should stick with it or go with a synthetic 75/90. This Explorer will never tow anything.

You can certainly go with the lighter oil. I like thick gear oils for the added shock load protection. The Explorer's SOHC 4.0 is nearly identical to the Ranger and I have owned and driven a lot of Rangers. We still have around 45 of them at work. I went to 140 in my SOHC 4.0 and didn't notice any difference in MPG or power.

A good synthetic 90wt will do just fine though. Especially if you do not tow anything, then really just use whatever weight gives you the warm and fuzzes, so long as it is a good quality oil.

What about splitting the difference!

I'm trying the Amsoil 75-110 as my next diffy lube, and this is in a Toyota Tacoma 4x4.

My recollection is that Ford changed the spec several years ago to 75W-140 because they were getting high wear in many of the Explorer rear diffs. I know that at least one friend of mine needed to have the rear diff rebuilt on their Explorer at around 100k miles, and they had done very little towing with it. Personally I would use the specified 75W-140 synthetic.

Which rear end is this? I have an 8.8 rear with the 4.0 OHV Ranger, and would like to know more.

Yeah. I cant find the graph, but in 2000 or 2001 ford changed from specifying 75W140 in police and truck apps only to specifying it in everything. This is telling, to me, since if it made that much of a difference, wouldn't they want the better MPG?

it is the 8.8 . Ford did change the specs on all of the 8.8 to require 75w/140 even though i can find no change in the rearend

My wife's 2003 4.0 Explorer with the 3.73LS has 75W-90 stamped or cast into the diff cover.

The owner's manual stated 75W-140. The owner's manual also listed the wrong fuel filter. I decided I'd take the diff's word for it rather than the the manual that I'd previously found errors in.
