The problem with flaring too high is that the aircraft gets slow while still well above the runway.Astro,
What happens on a 747 sized aircraft if the pilot flares too high? Can you just hold it off, then gradually pull the power off slowly and allow it to settle on its own? Or will you eat up too much runway?
Now, you have a couple of choices, you can add power, push the nose down, and the airplane will drop out of the sky, and you can hope to catch it again before it hammers on the runway.
Which is a terrible option by the way, and usually yields pretty hard landing.
Or, you can continue to “hold it off“ with aft pressure on the yoke, which leads to a long landing, which is dangerous in of itself because of brake energy and stopping distance, as well as a much greater chance of actually scraping the tail on the runway because of the increased pitch attitude.
So, you don’t want to flare high
The very best option, if you flare too high, and you won’t land in the touchdown zone, is to push forward on the power, hold the attitude, and initiate a go around.
