I have a Sony LCD that is 7 years old.
It still looks good but not as sharp as new LED sets.
How long do the LCD sets last?

The actual screen should last 10+ years baring 24/7 use.
Sometimes the electrical components will die fairly early and make it
uneconomical to repair.

Can always craigslist it and buy a new one.

As nice as the newer ones are I still feel they are inferior for sports vs a plasma.
for regular shows they are fine.

Obviously a nice 2000$ model is different than a 199$ 50"

It depends.
I'm using an LCD monitor made in 00 or 01 to post now.
Have old laptops from 93 and the displays work (one runs linux for a router).

What often fails are the supporting electronics - the inverter board or power supply.
They aren't hard to replace.

The problem I have is that while this set is just fine its only a 40".
I really want a new 55" 4K but cant do it while this set is still good.
Seems a waste of money and I don't have enough to be frivolous.

My Samsung 22 inch set is still going well and was purchased spring 06 but the remote is going bad. Now moved out of the kitchen to a little used bedroom. Your set if decent may last many more years. When I built my house in late 05 we used all cfl or tube lights. Only two bulbs have been replaced since.
The new 4k sets are pretty good and name brand entry sets are reasonable and CES starts this week so new stock will be hitting the stores next month so the 16s will be getting a good discount. Love the LG 6030 43 inch smart set we got for the kitchen. Was under $300 with extended square trade warranty. See the 49 for just $50 more now.

Then you've answered your own question. Live with what you have because you can't afford to have the new, flashy, giant idiot box. It sounds like a good reason to put down the remote control, get off the couch, and do something more than watch television.

They can last a LONG time, especially the ones with LED backlights (which weren't super common 7 years ago, though).

What usually dies on a regular LCD is the backlight- either the power supply or the fluorescent tubes themselves. The power supply is usually an easy fix, if you are sure that's what it is. Otherwise, you wind up "throwing parts at it and praying." Newer LCDs are so cheap and so much thinner/lighter than the ones made just 5 years ago, though, I'd probably just replace.

That Tv will probably last another 7+ years, but if you want a 55inch go get it. I have seen 55" for $300 or less, with more bells and whistles like built in Roku. I have 2 7+ year old plasma's that will stay right where they are because these new 4K tv's still can't touch their picture quality.

My 7 year old Sony 52" LCD is in the process of dying now. Apparently the Sony LCD panels of this vintage are junk and develop horizontal or vertical lines. I will never purchase another Sony product. Samsung for me from now on.

You must not have looked at a 4k tv playing 4k material.

I lived with a crt until last year because nothing looked that much better. Now we have two 4k tvs. And we rarely watch anything... but when we do, the picture is spectacular.

I don't spend much on Tv's as we don't watch them much. We have a 6 year old Insignia LCD TV from best buy that was under $200 new (40 inch). We moved that one to the bedroom then bought a 50 inch changhong tv a couple years back.

There is a difference between the LCD and the LED for sure. The LED TV is much brighter.

There is also a large difference between LED and 4k, the 4k looks much better.

They say you wont notice a difference with a 4K TV under 65".

It all depends on your viewing distance.

Still waiting on my 9 year old 27" CRT to bite the dust before I can experience that same massive difference. Could be a while still as the previous one lasted from 1985-2007

Funny you say that, as my CRT in the basement is still going since 2001.....
