Helping out a friend and want advice from the braintrust. A friend is putting a 2015MY 6.4 Hemi in their 74 Dart/Swinger. New cam and lifters as one of the lifters was jiggily after 74ishK miles. MDS was deleted as this is a 74. The cap says 0W40 and I was going to say that is probably good to stick with in something like M1 or 5W40 in whatever is cold and on sale at the parts house. Do these really need a 40wt or are they ok with a 5W30?

Just about any 3.5+hths 30/40 grade is preferable though a sub 3.5 30 grade wouldn't harm it but why bother using it.

Want to see pics of this swap!!
Can’t go wrong with M1 0W-40; but if it sees hard use in dry conditions, which I imagine it will, I’d also look at a full-syn 15W-40 as an option.

FWIW, when RAM launched the 6.4 in 2014 for the HD trucks, the RAM chief engineer and RAM brand CEO had a video question and answer session and it was brought up about the oil call out. It was revealed that all internal testing for the 6.4 HD motor used 5W-30 conventional. Basically it was implied they went to 0W-40 at launch to keep confusion from SRT 6.4 owners in other vehicles from using 5W-30.

I ran 5W-30 in my then owed 2015 RAM 6.4 2500 with analysis and had no issues or indications it would wear any worse over the 0W-40.

Do you happen to have a link to this video? Not saying you're wrong, just want to watch it as something seems odd there. The 6.4 SRT is pretty much the same as the 6.4 BGE in the truck. Why would they spec a 5w-30 in the truck application when towing at high RPMs for a long time is a given? They may have a different cam and get tuned differently (the BGE makes significantly less HP) but its the same basic internals as far as I know.
