I was planning to run 10W-40 regular in my Jetta 2.0L and my car doesn't do that many miles a week. Haven't seen any regular 5W-40 on the shelf. If you consider group 3 oils as conventional then yes. Such as Shell Rotella Synthetic 5W-40. I'm not 100% sure if Chevron/Havoline 5W-40, Castrol Syntec 5W-40 is group 3 as well. But most 5W-40 out there are labeled synthetic, some are group 3 (conventional based) and some are real synthetics. By the way does your 2.0L consume oil?

Your engine never reaches operating temperature. Personally, I'd find a different means of transportation, but if I were you and if I just had to use my car, I'd use a synthetic oil, because it's more suitable for that type service, which is pretty extreme.

very valid point moribundman. i know rotella 5w40 syn is available at Walmart for $13 or $14 a gallon. does this sound like a good choice of oil? any issues with the diesel oil and gasoline engines or cat. converters?

Racer, I was wondering the same thing about rotella 5w40. Anybody know that answer? Also, Is Mobil 1 Truck and SUV safe for cats???

I'm sure Rotella T 5W-40 will be fine in the VW 2.0 engine.

Mobil 1 5W-40 has so far not yet ruined my cats and O2 sensors, and my car consumes some oil.

Sulfated ash content in Mobil 1 5W-40 is under 1.5%, so I doubt emissions component poisoning is an issue unless an engine requires a low-SAPS oil.

now that i think about it new diesel trucks are coming with cats and people are running rotella 5w40 in those with out problems. should be the same unless the construction of the cat is different from a gas one.

"Is Mobil 1 Truck and SUV safe for cats???"

It's much safer for cats than a thinner PCMO on a car that burns oil, something that I recently experienced. I had been using a Mobil 1 T&S / PCMO blend, switched to 100% Mobil 10W30, and lost an oxygen sensor as well plugging the cat due to the much greater oil consumption. The EGR feedback port also plugged, and I also ened up with a heavily gunked throttle body as the EGR reroutes exhaust gases back into the intake. A classic 'spiral of death', although it's doing much better now after a bunch of cleaning a steady diet of 5W40. Looking back, if I had been using 5W40 all along I probably wouldn't have the oil consumption problem.

I think Shell a long time ago had a conventional 5w-40 but that is long gone. Citgo does have a semi-synthetic 5w-40 available, and the specs look pretty good.

1sttruck,

What type of car/truck do you have? How many miles ?

Do you feel Mobil 1 is to blame for your clogged Cat ?

i was wondering if there are any 5w40 conventional oils on the market. i know there are lots of 5w40 synthetic but the car it would be going into gets its oil changed every 3 months. it does not get driven much at all. maybe an avg of 5 miles per day. i have been using 10w40 in it but considering the 5w40 if it was available in conventional, not really too interested in a synthetic oil on such a short interval. the car is a 1998 vw beetle 2.0l gas engine.

I used to use Shell Rotella T syn 5W40 in my 2.0 Jetta and have since switched to Mobil 1 T&S 5W40 as it is only a few bucks more at Walmart. $20 for a 5qt Mobil 1 jug vs $14 for a Shell 4qt jug. The Mobil 1 is a true synthetic compared to the Shell.

My 04 2.0 Jetta doesn't use a drop of oil because VW is putting the rings in the engines the right way now, but man did my wife's old 01 2.0 Beetle drink oil. I believed her engine to be one of the many that had the rings installed upside down during that timeframe. That thing used a qt and even more sometimes every 1,000 miles from the day we bought it off the showroom floor. VW refused to do anything about it other than monitor the oil usage. I wasted alot of money on Mobil 1 with that car, but it never fouled the plugs or showed any evidence of oil on them and it never had any catalytic converter probs, so I don't know where all that oil was going. Maybe the ignition was hot enough to burn the oil off? Dunno, but by neighbors must have thought I was nuts because every couple of days I was out in the driveway checking the oil.

It's a 93 Taurus with almost 195k miles on it. I had used the Mobil 5000 10W30, and I don't think that make would have mattered as it appeared to be just too thin.

As mori pointed out ...you're no where near a 40 weight with that type of driving. Your oil is probably a 60 or 70 weight when you turn the key off. In 2.5-5 miles of driving, I'd expect to see maybe a 10-20 degree rise in oil temp above ambient. That is, a 5w-20 weight would work for that service. A 5w-20 has a 40C cst of around 40 ..which is way above a 50 weight @ 100C.

If you're consuming oil due to viscosity ..then there is no oil on the planet that can pump and solve your consumption issues if you had to operate this engine at normal oil temps.

If you are not consuming oil on any basis other than "hours of operation" ..then you're spending some hp pumping motor honey when you don't have to.

IMHO

So if a VW used a qt. in 1000 miles haw much would it use at 150K.
