Although its a little late, just wanted to find others' thoughts on using S9k in a Subaru Boxer4, for extended drains (approximately 10k), in winter weather??
The engine is spec'd for a lot of different weights, so the weight isn't a problem for use in this engine. I believe they call for anything from 5w30 to 20w50...obviously temperature dependent. I run wix filters, with a filtermag.
I just changed the S9k again last night at around 10.5k miles. I really like the s9k as it really calmed/quieted my "woodpecker" engine down...these engines are noted for cold start valve train noise.
Put around 10k this summer on S7k 5w30 (my intial change to "synthetic"), then switched this fall to 5w40 S9k (because I run it in the truck). The oil was still clear, starting to get brown...but not bad at all visually...and about the same visually as the Shell 5w30 running a 5k OCI. Really not bad considering the car has over 125k on the ticker.
I would assume that since its a 5w40, its really not much different than a 5w30 at cold start...and being synthetic, it should act better at cold temps (even being a 5w40) than the conventional Shell 5w30 I had been running.
I should have grabbed a sample, but I was pressed for time...getting things around to do some extended travel for work.
