Where are the millions of Ecoboost engines/turbos that have gone BOOM based on using a spec'd xw-20?

Ive personally never heard of using an oil one step thicker than what is called for causing issues. I could be wrong though.

FWIW, I ran AMSOIL Signature Series 0w20, then 5w30 in my Civic LX 1.5T, The 5w30 gave almost identical wear numbers, and had sheared down to 20w after only 5000 miles.

Did the AMSOIL Signature Series 0w20 you use shear? And if it did what was the viscosity and at what mileage OCI. Was the 5w30 also AMSOIL Signature Series? We have an Explorer with the 2.3 EcoBoost and my used oil analysis shows some shearing. In the summer it stayed, just at 30 wt after 7,000 miles on Mobil 1 5w30. In the fall I used Motorcraft 5w30 for 4,275 miles and it sheared well into the lower 20 wt viscosity. Over the winter I used Mobil 1 5w30 for 6,200 miles with lots of remote starts well below freezing and the viscosity went literally JUST below the 30 wt range. But over all these OCI's my used oil analysis showed excellent wear metals.

Might the reduced viscosity be due to fuel dilution?
