I dont see any issues with what your doing now on the Hyundai 1.6L. We use MC 5W20 Blend in ours. My Mother short trips a lot and we have to change it every 6 months (Under 3,000 miles) for warranty.

Whats wrong with the OLM on your dads car? If he just wants to be super conservative change it at 40% Oil Life Remaining. It will be more accurate than using a set mileage. That said I would likely go with Mobil DC5000 at current WalMart prices.

Using synthetic during winter, does the cabin take longer to warm up?

I dont know the answer to that yet when I bought it in DEc it had DINo in it, I had the hyundai dealership change it to GTX in Janurary bulk then in may of this year went to PP have enough for 2x 4 month OCIs. I didnt have problems with heater works quite well!
