My neighbor is running Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 in his 2003 Honda CRV & 2001 Accord and complains that the mechanical noise from the engine is louder with the 5w20 than with a 5w30.I keep telling him that Honda spec'd that and I it still protecting the engine. He is doing 4-5000 OCI's which seem too short to me. What do you think? Any Honda owners have the same issue or do Honda engines just sound like sewing machines?

I've used: GC, Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30, 0w-20, Amsoil 5w30, Havoline 5w-20, Red Line 5w-20 and probably others I can't think of over the course of 60k miles (7-10k mile drains on avg only 1 used oil analysis) in a 2005 Accord with the 2.4L and NEVER noticed noise issues from any of the oils above. I don't quite understand all the noise complaints from certain brands. Never experienced it.

I have only ever noticed noise changes on small 4 and 3 cylinder engines. Anything bigger too much is going on for that to be heard.

Went from the "dealers" 5W-20 Valvoline to 5W-20 PP and our Kia is a tad quieter at idle.

I have the 2005 2.4 CR-V. It has had factory fill, Amsoil 0w30, Mobil 1 5w20, and now Pennzoil Platinum 5w20. It was the quietest on factory fill, and has sounded identical on the latter three. Next oil for this car will be Amsoil's new 0w20. These engines do clatter but that's just how it is, apparently. Mine doesn't use a drop of oil over 5k.

He said his oil designation is SL and now all the oils are SM. I told him the SM is the new designation. Which is better? I would think the SM. FWIW, I called a local Honda dealer and they said all the CRV engines clatter. Nature of the beast and he should stick with the Pennzoil Platinum 5w20.

I'm going to borrow your post ;

" Familly member " has the 2006 2.4 CR-V. It has had ( in order ) factory fill, Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 and QS4X4TRUCK 5W20 ( syn ) . It was the quietest on factory fill, ( Yep by far ) Mine doesn't use a drop of oil over 5k.

Somewhat paradoxically quietier with the QS than the PP .

Perhaps double paradoxically ran out almost equally well from the drivers seat with factory fill (0014 -5K ) AND the QS ( 9500 - 10650 ). Filter probably not a factor was drained for 30 minutes warm and reinstalled .Did our usual " plus one drain " for almost exactly 1 extra quart .

The PP was slightly noisier upon change ( warm ) and substantially so by day three .
Stabilised after that , then later , and very gradually became yet a little noiser still in some circumstances and slightly quieter in others .
After surveying 12 CRVs ( 2004 -2006 ) and 6 other 2.4S pulled it out early .
Also worth noting ,the vehicle did appear to start slightly quicker . This was also first observed almost immediately after change .
Upon the second change from the PP to the QS improvement was noticeable just as quickly .
No recommendation - or explanation here , just observation .
Next oil change uncertain - we shall see .

. . . . the mechanical noise from the engine is louder with the 5w20 than with a 5w30.

That sounds like a no-brainer to me. If my engine was quieter with a thicker oil, I'd use it too. What's the problem?
