Just seems to me that 10w30 would offer more protection in 95 degrees and 85% humidity.

Yes it will.

What makes the 10w30 better than the 5w30?

I'm still amazed that people make that statement. Aren't people reading any scientific material on the subject of wear any more? The only time I can think of that a 10-30 would be AS GOOD AS a 5-30 is in a vehicle with very, very few cold starts. Otherwise, the 5-30 should provide better protection from wear than a 10-30.

Here we go!

I think we are splitting hairs here. IMO there won't be measurable difference between 10w30 and 5w30 during the summer months.

Is there even that much difference in viscosity between the two from say 20C to 100C

If I remember correctly, GC 0w30s viscosity is very similar to a lot of the 10w30 at say 10-20C. FWIW, I am running M1 0w20 in my Accord this summer and I'm not worried about it.

To answer the original question, IMO either will be fine. If it were me I would just use 5w30, use it year round, and forget about it.

I'm still in the same camp where you are going to see no discernible difference as a car owner if you ran your car with 10w30 to 300,000 miles vs. 5w30 to 300,000 miles.

Sometimes we sweat the minute details a little bit too much.

'02 F150 in Florida

I use Amsoil series 2000, 0Wx30 that should give real fast lubrication when cold and the safety of a 30 weight oil when hot.

Now guys you need to be very, very careful when you question someone's post. I got lambasted in M1accords thread for questioning his methodology in his study of oil use in Florida. It seems the proper action is to pat the poster on the head, give him some cookies and milk and tell him what a swell post he just made. This disagreeing and pointing out bad ideas must simply stop.

"So you asked a few people at a car show what kind of oil they use. Based on their answers you have concluded that "people here run much heavier oil than we do in DC". I think it's a stretch to assume what a handful of people at a car show use represents what the average driver in Florida uses.

There was a car show at the Sam's Club recently. I don't think I could ask a handful of people what they're using and then proclaim that's what everybody in Indiana uses."

As you can see. The differance was not just the differance in ideology. It was you have an tendency to make it a personal attack.

Well Dave, tell you what I'm going to do. In the future if I want to challenge someones post I'll PM you a couple of my potential responses. You can read them over and decide which one is kind and gentle enough. Then you can let me know via PM or just post it for me. You can even edit them to meet your standard. This way no one gets their feelings hurt and you can spend more time studying oil and less time protecting defenseless board members from me. Deal?

I think in honour of farrarfan1, I'll get me some milk and cookies tonight. . .

I hope you enjoy them, but do consider skim milk and reduced calorie cookies. Your service to this community is invaluable and should not be compromised by possible health issues.
