5w-20 to 5w-30?

Hi guys, i just joined BITOG. Quick question...I have Accord V6 and says to use 5w-20 but I want to run 5w30 for the summer months here in Boston. Will this hurt my engine at all or is it ok? Does 5w-20 provide better protection than 5w30?

I run either mobil 1 or PP synthetic.

I used Mobil 1 5w30 in my Odyssey last summer. I didn't notice any differences. I have been told any synthetic 5w30 flows well enough to not be any kind of a problem. You will get lots of posts on the wonders of 5w-20 and I am not going to argue against them. I suspect either one protects equally well, but I like the higher viscosity in the summer.

generally 20wt oils are held to a higher standard than 30 wt oils, making them arguably more robust. Additioanlly, going with a syn oil like M1 or PP will give you another level of protection that is just more icing on the cake as far as protection and resistance to harsh conditions go.

Id pick one oil, the OE reccomended one and stick with it. Unless youre willing to go with a used oil analysis to verify one performance vs another, there is more than enough data to show that 20 wt oils protect quite well and you can be confident in them.

You likely wont see any sort of adverse effects from using a 30wt oil, but I cant see the real benefits either, especially when a half decent syn oil is used.

It wont hurt anything, but you will gain nothing. If it helps you sleep at night, do it and forget about it.
 
Generally-speaking, 5W-20s are built better than 5w30s.... meaning additional friction modifiers/lower shearing rate....etc.

Until you find issues with 5W-20, I would stick with it.

BTW... I loved touring your downtown pilgrimage-area of the city. Actually, I enjoyed all of Massachussetts. From Salem to the north - down to Plymouth, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket to the south. Real nice state you got there.
 
Ok I will stick with 5w-20 then, im running PP w/pureone Oil filter now and changing to Mobil 1 Extended Performance next OCI. I do a lot hwy driving from boston to Ottawa so i need an oil for longer OCI.

Despite the cold winter months here in NE its a beautiful state with Pilgrimage scenery no others have.

Did you ever use MC? It's the Korean made GRP II. I might put some new MC in this weekend. Don't know yet.. How was the PP. Did it outperfrom the other oils. What else did you use and what was the 'before and after' of the PP??

06Vtec: After 1200 miles I switched out of the factory oil to M1 synthetic w/ bosch filter then at 6300 miles i just recently switch to PP w/ pureOne. Engine sounds smoother or maybe the engine is broken in better dunno for sure. I'm thinking about going to Mobil 1 Extended Performance at 10k and do 6-7k OCI after that. Money is not an issue when it comes to oil, i just want the best for the engine.
 
oh yea engine starts smoother than the M1 for some reason. When I switch to Mobil 1 Extended Performance I'll decide then wether to stick with M1 or PP.
 
I am having same doubts. But I am sticking with 5w20 for now. API SM/ILSAC GF4 should have high standards no?

I want to know whether the following are true
1. Ford wants 5w20 for CAFE reasons.
2. Honda wants 5w20 for emissions reasons (PZEV, SULEV etc)
Also, 5w20 has less sulphur, phosphorus etc which means catalytic converters last longer.

My guess is that 5w30 is good in the long run than 5w20.

So far the results 5w20 has put up would make you very wrong.
 
are there results which indicate 5w20 provides equal or better long term protection? Or, even if true, would mileage at which this would be so high that it is insignificant?
 
Per tech data sheets, 30's are a little more durable than 5w-20. The engine may be designed for 5w-20. If the car drives, runs and idles well using 5w30 the engine is saying either grade is ok. If you noticed increased consumption during cross country driving 5w30 may bring that consumption down.
