Perhaps once these oil drain holes get plugged nothing will help, implying that if you AutoRX prior to this, it may do some good. But that's all conjecture on my part.

I am hoping that the Auto-RX will un-plug the drain holes, then maybe a thinner oil will drain back more readily. I don't intend to try it until the Auto-RX is completed. Not sure what brand, maybe some of that fancy Pennz Platinum I keep reading about here. Lots of time to ponderize before the RX treatment is done. Decisions, decisions....

Thanks,

You may want to read Dr. Haas' writings on oil flow/migration in the upper ring area. I can't quote it ..or even remember it fully, but there was a distinction between lighter and heavier oils in this migration. Given that you have an engine that this presents an issue, it may alter your decision one way or the other. Seeing as the fine doctor is a believer in lighter is better, I tend to think that this referenced material (SAE paper type stuff) supports the use of lighter oils. Now, admittedly, any "presentation" typically isn't going to include data that is counter to the purpose/intent of the presenter ..but that surely doesn't automatically discount the data presented.

That one guy would be me!

Yes, my 2002 3.2L (same as the 3.5) ran smooth as silk on the 5w-20. I ran it for 2 OCI's, about ~8Kmi. No measurable consumption, noises, etc.. I couldn't stop 'experimenting', so I went from 5w-20 to Shell RT 5w-40.
