So the wife calls me this morning and tells me the car overheated. 1999 Cadillac Catera with about 87,000 miles. So I filled up a jug and ran over to where she was stopped. Opened the hood, slowly opened the overflow canister and the fluid had leaked out, it's a pressurized system. I filled the overflow tank and started up the car and noticed the gasket for the cap had not shrunk, it had gotten bigger and didn't fit in the cap anymore. It also had a spot where it was deteriorated and was about to fall apart. So I got things under control and I told her, "follow me down the road, there is a Cadillac dealer right close".

We go to the dealer and man what a nice, fancy dealership, reel purty. So I ask the parts guy about the gasket and cap. He goes back, brings the part and says "you're probably not going to like this, it's $58". I said no way am I paying $58 for a plastic overflow tank cap". I thanked him and left shaking my head.

I went home and found a thin rubber beer can cover. I cut our a gasket and put the cap on after filling the overflow cannister again. No radiator light, no overheating. The whole episode was caused by a worn out little gasket which you can't buy. Only the cap AND the gasket.

$58 for $1.50 worth of material?

Bravo, stogiedude!

They don't call them Stealerships for nothing...

(even though they need to make a $. That is also why their low low labor rate is only $140 an hour)

Welcome to Catera ownership...my buddy had one of those Opals and man it was the biggest turd ever!! Have you had the oil heat exchanger go out yet??? That was fun to figure out for him...it's an instant milkshake under the oil fill cap when the gaskets do finally go! Watch the valve cover gaskets and cooling fans as well! Sorry that you had to deal with the Cadillac guys on that car...it's kind of an orphan to them. Catera's zigged their way out of existence a while ago so even junk yard parts would be hard to find these days. If you are interested in a nice K&N filter I think my buddy still has a low mileage one from his 98 (he just traded it in). Good job solving your issue with a beer coolie!! Hopefully you got to drink one after you were done.

Loved my little Catera when I had it. For the 2 1/2 years I had it, nothing ever happened until I went to trade it in (still under warranty) but the head gasket went out. It was a very comfortable car and my passengers always loved the heated seats all the way around. :)

Think I'd check local parts store for non-O.E.M. cap. Whatever stuff you used is more than likely gonna break down soon. Either from heat or antifreeze.

You may get away with one overheating,,two, and my money'll be on a head gasket replacement.

I have my eye on a 2003 Olds minivan or maybe a Pontiac Vibe for the wife. She needs reliable transportation. The Catera was fine until I had this guy who I know work on it, since then nothing has gone right with that car. Either my daughter or I will drive the Catera next. I'm hoping to get another year or two out of it and then sell it for whatever I can get.

Good point alreadygone.

Thanks for the Napa tip tom slick. If my beer insulator material doesn't hold up I'll be heading to Napa.

RockAuto lists a Stant one for $10.80.

I wish they shipped here, I got burned ordering a [censored] set of power window switches for $180 through the dealer when it was $58 for the same thing off RockAuto.

RockAuto does ship internationally.

Don't feel too bad. A friend bought a Porsche 928 a few years back. It only came with one ignition key, so he decided to get a spare one. Nobody had blanks at the usual places, so he went to a dealer. They wanted over a hundred bucks for another key. At that point he knew he wouldn't be keeping the car long.

Yep. Standard Acura keys with the immobilizer system are over $100 after parts costs and 1 hour of labor to program the key. The newest sidewinder switchblade style keys that are integrated with the door lock remote are even more.

Don't lose the keys with newer cars. Guaranteed over $100 to replace them. Can't just go the hardware store anymore to get a new one, either.

You pay a price for security and convenience.

Anyway, sorry for the threadjack. Catera's were always the [censored] of Cadillac cars, taking over that role from the Cimarron. Seems that they just didn't sell enough of them for parts to be common.

No problem, hijack all you want. Replacement keys is another peeve of mine.

The Cadillac CTS that replaced the Catera seems to use the same engine based on the pics I've seen. I don't know if the CTS is carrying on the tradition of being unreliable and prone to problems?

If they use the automatic key cutting machines, I have found the success rate of getting a good key, is less than 50%. I go to the local lock smith and never have any problems.

Yeah it almost seems as if you have to go to the locksmith to get a good cut key anymore.
