Are you going to find a super rare numbers match car for a couple grand, no, not going to happen. But there are still plenty of desirable "collector cars" that can be had for a good price.
If anyone ever thought classic cars was a hobby for the "average joe" they are just plain foolish. Cars are expensive any way you slice it.
And if you really follow the prices at Barrett Jackson, you will notice a lot of very well bought cars, to the point that the cosigner regrets taking it there. And the prices are way down from where they were 4-5 years ago. If Barrett Jackson sold every car with a price out of the ballpark, anyone selling a collector car would be a fool for NOT taking it there, and that's clearly not the case.
Easy now dude - let me elaborate some more. First - I do own collectible cars and can "afford the hobby". I am just forunate to have a pristine 1987 Buick GN bought new that I hope continues to rise in value and I have a 1967 Corvette 427 that I rec'd from my father who had it since new. I would never be able to afford that Corvette had it not been for Dad - that car would bring high 80's at a BJ auction.
Anyway - Here is my view...yes there are some nice cars that are WORTH the money - no doubt...but how do you explain BJ selling old FAKE Chevelle SS's and such for so much money. Just last year I watched 2 known SS clones sell for over 50k! In the car hobby, among the pure collectors, these "clones" used to be shunned and laughed at at car shows. They are not worth anymore than what a base Malibu would go for - which is under 10k. But somebody "makes it an SS" and BAM! they add 40k to the price. That is messed up and then add the yuppies that jump and and buy these cars and never drive them only to sell again. It's like buying and selling gold to them.
BJ does have some nice pieces - but fools paying for clones is just stupid and beyond belief to me. Before BJ, you could by a nice '67 Vette like mine for a reasonable prioe...
