Depends on the engine. Some have computers or mechanical parts that start getting spooky at those oil temps.

The larger issue is that oil cooler failure gains a whole new meaning: Coolant in your engine, and oil in your cooling system.

There's a reason why far and wide, vehicles that come with these things also have a history of owner deletion of them.
 
Ive had a faulty fitting on my oil cooler once and what a mess that makes when it dumps all your oil

I took my current oil cooler off last night and some of those h bar style ones must not get that good of circulation the oil in that thing was dirty

I haven't heard of anyone having a failure with the CVPI cooler. But, I guess if you never change your coolant, something is bound to fail.
By far the most common problem is the hoses and o-rings failing and leaking.
The hose connections are custom and can't be replicated by a hyd. shop. The hose set from Ford is near $200.
I can buy the standard oil filter adapter for $110 + $30 for the gasket where it attaches to the engine block and not have to worry about any leak.
 
There is little chance for the Ford filter type coolers to fail. The o ring may need replaced if you take it off but if left in place they seal well.
 
If the ford oil filters were to fail how would they fail. would they just start leaking oil. its hard to see the coolant getting mixed with the oil.
 
If there is a leak in the internal cooler, your oil goes into your coolant and vice versa.

The Powerstroke 6.0 was one engine very well known for this (among other things).
