Parentheses first: 9 + 3 = 12.

The rest depends on how the division looks. As it is written, you would have 48 / 2 = 24, and then 24 * 12 = 288. However, it were 48 / (2 * 12), then you would have 48 / 24 = 2.

288.

PEMDAS - but go left to right for operations...multiplication and division are the same rank, so you do them left to right.

So, parens first, then divide, then multiply...288...

You said it right, but didnt follow it right.
(48 ÷ 2) * (9 + 3) = 288

It's 2.

When you have 48 / 2(9+3) You would do the 9+3 first, since it is in parenthesis. Then you multiply that by 2. (Multiplication first) then, you would divide 48 by that.

So 48 / 2(12)
48 / 24
2

Its a matter of whether the 12 is in the numerator or denominator. Clearly its in the numerator. 90% of government educated school kids would probably fail this...wait they use calculators.

And here is a hint: Use a calculator... Unless you have a RPN one it knows what order to perform.

rofl what. Operations, in this case the 48 is the numerator, because it comes first in the equation.... Right? Ugh. I hate math. The one thing I'm not very good at.

The fact that there are people who CAN'T get the right answer for that equation scares me!

....c'mon, that is pretty freaking basic math!

:P

It's not a matter of whether you can or can't do math. It's a matter of how you see what is presented.

If the problem were written as 48 ÷ 2 * (9 + 3), it'd be easier to see: divide 48 by 2, and then multiply the result by the sum of 9 and 3. But the way it's written, some people see it as a fraction with 48 on top and 2(9 + 3) on the bottom, which leads to a different answer.

It's quite simple!

Following the basic nomenclature of math, 48÷2(9+3) = 48÷2*(9+3) = 48÷2*12 = 288

If it was 48÷(2(9+3)) then the answer would be 48÷(2*12) = 2

Agreed.

288.
