The recent issue of Guns & Ammo tested a .44 Special Charter Arms Bulldog and gave it pretty high marks for a personal defense weapon at a reasonable price of $399. I was thinking of picking one up as a second home defense weapon to complement my .38 Special S & W Model 10, one for the upstairs bedroom and one in the kitchen on the first floor, the rationale being that if someone broke in while I was sleeping I couldn't get to the gun on the first floor 'cause that's where the bad would be. Any opinions on this caliber and gun for home defense? Also, what is the best .44 Special load? Thank!

Not a whole lot of options for the .44 Special. I would give a look at the Silvertips for defense rounds. Should be fine for home defense, ballistics are similar to .45 ACP if not a little better.

I second the Silvertips. I have them in .44 MAG and Special. While I don't use my .44 for defense, I always have defensive ammo in all my calibers on hand just in case.

My load for my Charter Arms Bulldog is Blackhill Thunder Ranch 250gr. I used to carry the Silvertip load but I needed more penetration for car doors and such.
