4.6 dohc filter

I've got a pretty lengthy qeustion,so hold on. 1997 4.6l dohc used as a donor engine in Factory Five Mk.III roadster. Original owner tried to run factory filter, but was hitting the frame and cracked the filter. He installed a Trans Adapt oil filter relocator with a PH8 filter, that is now leaking at the block location plate. I can run a ph48 AC delco on the factory spot that clears the frame with plenty of room to spare. Question is, will it hurt to drop from approx. 44sq.in. to approx 23sq. in. of filtration with the filter change. Looks like a lot of people are running the UPF48R Delco that was oem for Corvettes, so looks like if they will filter and take the pressure the Vettes run, I should be o.k. for a stock 4.6 dohc engine. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Yes the UPF48R are good filters and would be a good choice. They have full microglass media which has a higher contamination capacity than cellulose.

The only issue is they are no longer in production and somewhat expensive.

I would recommend a Fram Ultra XG10060 which is a full microglass media filter and can be very affordable. It's the cross reference to the PF48, they also catch smaller particles than the AC Delco Ultra Guard filters with the Fram Ultras being over 99%efficient at 20 microns and 80%@5 microns.

Either one is a fine choice. Microglass media doesn't age and they use silicone anti drain back valves in the AC Delco Ultra Guards so they should be good even if they are old stock. I would just inspect the main sealing gasket and check for dry rotting, which may be a concern and another reason to use fresh filters.

Funny the AC Delco UPF48R is called the Ultra Guard an the Fram XG lineup is just Fram Ultra yet I see people calling them Fram Ultra Guards which isn't correct and confusing.

Thanks for the info! I was mostly concerned about the loss of filtration area, but seems like the Fram Ultra will take care of me just fine. Good to know about the Delco units being discontinued, also. Great information!
