.308/7.62x51 rifles?

I'm thinking of picking up a .308 to fire the less expensive surplus ammo. My buddy Jon is looking at getting a .223 for the same reason.

1000 rounds for $449.00, or less than $0.50 a cartridge vs about $1/round for .308 win.

I still intend on getting that milspec Remington 500 in .308 but with the impending new microwave purchase, it's a little rich for my taste at this point.

Who makes a good, reliable bolt-action .308 that is around the $500.00 or less mark?

Id go for a Norinco M14 clone. They are semi-auto though but are fun to shoot

A few places online, I just googled it.

I don't want a Chinese gun if that matters, has to be an American-made gun. I'm thinking Savage, Remington, Winchester....etc.

Ah ok. Springfield M1A's are sweet but pricy

I will have to look then, last time I checked Marstar was out of 7.62x51 and had no idea when they would get more.

I am partial to the M1A family, especially the SOCOM II.

I would be looking at

1. Mossberg MVP
2. Howa 1500/Weatherby Vanguard
3. Savage/Stevens

Disclaimer - I am a fan of detachable magazines. I am a fan of, and I hate to use the word, "tactical" looking guns.

I would also suggest looking at the Howa 1500 instead of the Remmy if you are wanting a "custom" gun. It has more features than the 700, and most if not all things you can do to a 700 that you would need to do to a 1500 can be done. There is a detachable mag kit and 2-stage trigger available from Howa. The mags are plastic but people have commented on their ruggedness. YRMV

One word--Savage.

You can buy an Accutrigger model with a scope at WalMart for $500. This is a 100yd. target from just such a rifle in .243.



Not sure if Milsurp ammo will shoot as well as my handloads do, but this is representative of what a $500 Savage is capable of.

For accuracy, great trigger and price, it's tough to beat a Savage.

VERY nice!! I have a Savage 10/110 in .270 already and it is a beautiful gun. Was leaning toward Savage on this one too, but figured I'd ask the question

Interesting that no one suggested the Remington 700. They can be found in various configurations from lightweight models all the way up to 3 sided barrels.

The tactical version is often on sale, and generally quite accurate.

Sorry, that was the gun I meant to reference in my original post. The 700 R5 Milspec:

Which is a bit more than twice what I wanted to spend at this point

Though I do have intentions of getting it down the road.

I shot a 700sps tactical at a grand. Very nice. Stock is garbage.

Howa 1500. Very nice Japanese action. Weatherby sells it as the Vanguard and S&W used to as their 1500. I find them a better put together action than a Savage.

If you have a bit more to spend, the CZ is the action to get. I just love controlled feed bolt guns versus push feed.

+ on on the Howa 1500. Mine is a tack driver and fit finish is excellent! Best bang for the buck IMO.

slightly, but was in the original post, be careful with your mate's choice that you get something that will fire the mil-spec ammo, as there's reputedly a difference in the .223 and 5.56 freebore.

My CZ527 is chambered with freebore to handle mil stuff...1:12 twist doesn't work with a lot of it 'though,

Savage Model 10 or derivative thereof (not the Edge/Axis). They can be rebarreled easily too. If you want accustock and accutrigger, look at newer ones.

But if you want to save money, get a .223 and a reloading press. Surplus .308/7.62 doesn't shoot well - save it for your AR-10 or M1A and 3-gun matches.

So you think a Savage .223 would be a smarter buy?
