I look at this different. Show me any analysis with these results after 30K. Also he had the benefit of clean oil continousily during the operation of the vehicle. The other advantage is that he didn't have to get under the vehicle to open the drain plug, mess with the FF, and any other items. And at 30K the oil was still ready for more miles. I am not sure, but there maybe some thing to these bypass filters.

I think your right and I also think Amsoil should make it clear that if you really want extended drains, use a Bypass filter otherwise goodluck.

It doesn't look like there is anything to those bypass filters. How about running the car with no bypass, or an empty one, and every three thousand miles draining one quart of oil and adding one fresh quart. Compare those results with these and I bet the results will be similar.

You could for the hassle also have just run the oil for 10,000 miles and changed it in the filter every 10,000, and only gotten messy 3 times instead of the ten it took to change the bypass.

Interesting comments. I'll take the bypass route and have clean oil while the engine is in use. By the way, I do not sell bypass filters or any other product. Just a 35 year veteran user of bypass filters.

I am sure I could have had very good results had i not changed the filter quit so frequently..but I am not doing an experiment to see how far I can run 5 quarts of oil...I am trying to make my car last...so I try to have clean oil at all times... Yes my oil is clean at almost all times...tell you what..if you think that just changing you filter and topping of is just as good...try it for 30000 miles and let us see YOUR UAO....bet your ## won't hold a candle to mine..

BTW When I first put the filter on I ran a used oil analysis at 4800 miles..and the oil barley showed as having been used( Amsoil)

I think one of the points he's trying to make is that to say you have "29500 miles on oil" is deceptive. You might have 29,500 miles on a couple ounces, and 27,000 on a couple, and 24,000 on a couple, and 21,000 on a couple, etc. So assuming the car holds 4 quarts at a time plus 1 quart in the bypass, and that you started off with 5 quarts and swapped out 1 quart 9 times (every 3,000 miles), the AVERAGE time on any given quantity of oil in that engine after 30,000 miles would be 13,389.39 miles. Which makes this a much different oil analysis.

If anyone cares how I got that number, imagine that you have 5 separate quart-sized containers of oil, each with 3,000 miles on it. Now switch out one quart for a quart with 0 miles on it. Now mix the oil all around and you have 5 quarts with an average mileage of 3,000+3,000+3,000+3,000+0 over 5 equals 2,400 miles. Now put another 3,000 miles on each of them. Iterate this nine times (in, say, MS Excel) and you get a final average of 13,389.

What's interesting about this is that the limit of this formula as n goes to infinity is 15,000, i.e. after 500,000 miles, your oil would still have an average of 15,000 miles on it. Obviously draining one quart every 3,000 miles is the same as draining 5 quarts every 15,000 miles, which is why the answer works out the way it does, but it's interesting because the math shows that if your oil could hold out another 1,500 miles without being topped up (and it looks like it would), then in theory you could go on like this perpetually and never do a full drain again, although you would have to keep changing the filter media.

The constant oil change sounds like that Cummins system that dumps a quart into the fuel tank, then adds a fresh quart for a super extended change period.

Bypass filters interest me, but I'm still confused as to whether they make the engine live longer, or keep the wear metals from the oil (and thus the UOA).

Maybe we need to start looking at UFA (Used filter analysis) to see how much material is lost from inside the engine, rather than what remains in the oil.

This is a test I've been thinking of doing myself, unless someone else on here wants to try it first! I think it would be very interesting to see.
 
Patman, I agree.

It's very off topic, but at work, I look after 4 turbines.

2 are 60s British technology and manage to leak 10% of the sump capacity per annum (5000 litres per year makeup). The oil lasts literally forever. We only change it when we have to inspect the coatings inside the oil tank.

2 Are reasonably modern GE derivatives. They don't consume oil, and need a change every 6 or 7 years (RBOT testing for oil life)

Not to get in a ****ing contest, but there are few problems with your suggestion. First, me doing what you propose with my car bears no relationship to your VOA numbers. Which car should I do it with, the 94 BMW, the 91 Nissan, or the 96 Landcruiser? All have different VOA's and and they wouldn't be the same as your even using the same oil and change interval.

In order for it to be even a slightly valid experiment, the test would have to compare the same car, with and without the bypass, with the same oil, for the same milage.

What I am suggesting is that you did not run the same oil for 30,000 miles, you instead swapped out 10 quarts, one quart at time. Was the good result because of the bypass filter, the additional oil, or both? Without doing the above test, we don't know. What would be the used oil analysis on your engine if you had used the same oil, same filter, no bypass and changed every 10,000? It is better to change the oil one quart at a timee every 3000 mile, or all at the same time every 10,000 and get all of the stuff out?

Bottom line is that it is being assumed that the bypass filter is the reason the used oil analysis is so good. I am saying that one data point and assumptions do not allow for any scientific conclusion.

Another way to look at this is that, on the average, one quart of oil was replaced every 3,000 miles, replenshing the additive package, which is not a bad idea unto itself.

I have done this myself in the past and it works pretty well.
 
I have the larger Gulf Coast 01 on my 95 Ford Power Stroke diesel. It uses the PT filter and holds 5 quarts of oil with the engine holding 15 quarts for a total of 20qts. I am now changing the bypass at 10K intervals. So I am using 5qts every 10K for a filter change instead of 15 quarts every 3K as recommended by Ford for severe useage. Plus I am saving the $10 FF change every 3K. Economics and clean oil continousily movitate my decision to use this method.

Blackstone seems to think that bypass filter do not just hide wear results. Here is as email response from them.

Please post your 30,000 miles results with < 0 ppm Pb ,10 ppm Fe, 3 Al, etc.

I, for one, think you are just publicly choking the chicken. Or is that a Monza you drive?

So if my LS1 engine uses a quart of Mobil 1 every 1700-1800 miles and I just change the filter once in a blue moon, I could just as easily go 30,000 miles without a complete oil change...or not?
