I went back and forth with debating transfer switches and standby generators given the fact we lose power maybe once a year, but when we do it can get quite cold. I didn't want a standby as we don't have LP and the fact we were limited to circuits, I want to be able to use any circuit if needed.
So I ended up changing my whole panel for a 50A generator-ready panel. Was a day of work for a trained crew but worth it IMO.
Mine has seperate watt meters but if you are on the fence this is the best and most cost effective way if you want to use a portable generator.

This way you can select any circuit in the home to energize, being mindful of loads. I turn off the water heater and the drain field pump until needed. The 11KW portable generator will run the HVAC and start a 1.5 HP well pump that's 550' down with no issues, as well as all of the lights, microwave, and Fios. In the winter I use a fireplace insert and turn off the strip heaters if power is out in the winter. Don't need that unpredictable 5KW surge as the fireplace is enough with the coil heat. LED lights are your friend to reduce current draw.
If you lose power often, and want a portable generator.....with the cost of a transfer switch install, the extra $$ to swap panels is a very nice option and not breaking the bank.
