Can someone tell me where the heck this bolt goes? It's one of the shorter cylinder head bolts. It also goes in the back. Also, can someone tell me what attaches to it? Thanks.

Um, I dont know. I did not use it on the 3400 I did. Its an extra to use in place of one of the other outside bolts on some vehicles that need it.
Check your stock bolts and see if you took off one like it.

IIRC the 3400 uses two of these for mounting the coil pack bracket on the rear.
On the front i think one like this is used for a ground cable on the right side.

Maybe the same on the 3.1?

That's what I thought. But I got all my old head bolts together and realized I never took something off that looked like this. After putting all the head bolts in, there was one left over. I think Fel Pro just threw it in there for a 3.4 liter engine.

It does, doesn't it. I had it left over on a 3.4L IMG job, and had to dissasemble a bunch of stuff to put it back in. If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's kind of hidden in the back.

Yeah, I think thats right.
The diagram posted above seems to indicate it goes on the front, second from the bolt closest to the belt drive. But there is nothing there! Im looking at the pics of the one I took apart and I see no reason for it to be there. The engine mount does not go over that far.
This is why I take pictures when I am taking engines apart. Manymanymany pictures. Invaluable reference for what goes where and how. Its saved my bacon more than a few times.

Yeah it does look like the bolt the alternator bracket bolts too. I was looking at it wrong. GM has used so many different setups I can't keep them straight anymore without seeing the vehicle in person. The diagram is probably for a different model.
