Does anyone have any recommendations on the Ford Fusion 2nd Gen 2013-2020 as an inexpensive used car. There are a number of engines and transmissions to chose from. The 2.0 Ecoboost and 2.0 Hybrid might be interesting. I’m finding used cars are selling at a discount compared to used SUVs. The closer to 2013 the better, which was the first year of the 2nd Gen barring any new production problems.

We have three higher mile Fusions of that generation in my immediate family. The one I bought for my daughter; I sought out the 2.5 (16 model) and we've not been disappointed. The 2.5 is your safest bet. The other two were bought by my sons, both are 1.6 Eco's which I would consider less desirable but they both have been really solid as well, one at 145k the other approaching 180k.

The highest trim models often come with the 2.0 Eco, which should be avoided 2017 thru 2019 due to gasket issues.

I'd stick with 2017+ if you want a safer car than previous years. However it's all one's priorities and budget. Ford did a good job on these 2013+ IMO. Early ones are good I just think newer ones look better. Have fun shopping.

I've got a 2016 2.0 ecoboost, no problems so far powertrain wise. The engine feels powerful enough to me. Ours has awd too. Like others have mentioned seek out the 2.5 for reliability. If you do go with an ecoboost I'd suggest short oil drain intervals.

Floor it in the test drive and look for a sloppy 2-3 shift.

Lock to lock on the electric steering and listen for noises.

Some hybrids had a bearing in the transmission that would make noise and go bad. But I think the hybrid is generally reliable.

2.5 is a great engine.

IMO, a great chassis. Good ride/handling trade-off and quiet cruiser.

I looked at a 2018 Fusion before buying the Mazda 3 for my wife. I would only consider the 2.5L as I am not an ecoboost type of guy. However, the Ford dealer was like who are you who is looking for a basic Fusion. So I went to Mazda for a basic Mazda 3 and found one of the lot that passed my inspection. Must have been there awhile as they gave me two discounts to bring the out the door price of $18K. That was only $1.5K over my Focus in 2004. One discount was because I drove in with a 91 Mazda 626 which attracted attention.
