Not really. I can put a wire nut on the top of a tube of caulk and it won't dry out. And if I wanted to use some sort of putty, there are plenty of puttys such as Plumbset or museum putty that won't dry out.

I screw a large sheet metal screw into the tip of all my caulk. This has worked great for me for years.

Wire nut, I like that idea.

I usually put some tape (clear or duct) over the end.

I just try to do my caulking to use up the tube in one shot. If any remains I just squeeze a little out so it dries on the outside. Worst case the tube goes in the garbage and I get another for 5$.

Is that a black cap on the end ? Will it keep the stuff from drying out ? It's pricey at $16.49 a can.

That's a pressurized can with a valve... only the clear tip will need cleaning if dried. We have them at the shop, but we use a decent bit of RTV. At home, I keep smaller tubes around so they don't sit around forever.
