Ok, I am drawn to projects. Looking at a 24KW Yanmar diesel generator that apparently needs a new turbo as oil is comes out of the turbo. Assume it needs a new turbo what do people think it's worth?

Budget for a new injection pump too. Unless you got spare parts lying about, In other words, its a hunk of iron.

They'd have to have it disassembled for me to be interested, even if I bought it as a toy. I'd be needing to inspect the internals for foreign object damage and any signs of forbidden glitter.

Boroscope through the glow plugs, look for scratches? I’ll bet they want 1k. 50/50 odds it’s worth that. It’s worth more if the block is still good. Even more if the fuel system is healthy. Otherwise, it’s probably only scrap value, or $500 for a labor of love. Admittedly, if I had the tools and resources, $500-$1000 is where I’d be, knowing it could be a full motor overhaul if cylinders saw shrapnel.

These are not lightweight toys.

I was just watching a video about a marketplace purchase of a Detroit Diesel they claimed was stored inside and ran last year. Disassembly seemed to indicate it was stored for decades in a bath of sea water....

The turbo can also push oil out its seals when the engine has excess blowby to prevent the natural draining of the turbo pressurized oil. .

I hear you. I see things for sale mentioning a problem and then saying "probably a simple fix". If it was only a simple fix why didn't they fix it?
Sometimes people really don't want to be bothered even though it is an easy fix. Sometimes they have no clue and hope "easy fix" gets it sold. I read a car article a while back where a guy in Kentucky listed a C63 AMG for sale. The ad was "overheats come get." The buyer mentioned checking to see if the thermostat was bad but the seller swore it was a head gasket. 5 grand and a new thermostat and all good.

Sometimes you can find a job site pull behind light tower trailer fairly cheap that can also be used as a generator.

Granted the Yanmar was nearly 4x this when at its prime, but usually you can find a 7kw Kubota diesel for around 5-6k on sale. They are designed to be moved with a skid loader, but guys will put them on the garden wagons with the pneumatic wheels. Occasionally, you can find a Yamaha branded generator that is the exact thing as the Kubota, but with a blue paint job and the Yamaha name. Guys sell them and have no idea what they are so they go for cheap.
