.22LR vs .22 WMR

I would go with the 22LR for target shooting. The 22LR is probably the most common short range bench rest caliber used.

If you are doing long range varmint hunting, then look for a 223 rifle. You can get a Savage Edge for about $300. About 30 years ago, the cost of 50 rounds of 22 WMR was close to the same as 50 rounds (2-1/2 boxes) of 223 Remington. The 223 was about $2.50 for a box of 20. Back then, you would have been better off with a 223 rifle for varmint shooting than the 22WMR.

Someone suggested the .17 rimfire. This is a good round, but it doesn't like a cross wind.

How about the GSG-5 My BIL has one! What a hoot to shoot.

.22LR is just one of those rounds every shooter needs. Cheap and versatile. For varmits, I prefer the 222 or 223 round. Used to spend the summers at my Uncle's farm in MN. My job was to take out gopher, prarie dogs, coyotes, what ever. I had a 700 chambered in .222 with a 6x scope. Boy, I would love to do that again.

Just coming from the range A guy has a Savage heavy barrel rifle chambered for the 17 that is the necked down 22 mag and at 100 yards were grouping a ragged half inch [12.3mm] group. I was most impressed.

Just make sure with a .17 that there is NO wind. Never seen a round so impacted with ANY wind.

But in nice still (early AM) conditions I've never seen a .17 that was not scary accurate.
