'21 Toyota CH-R; may need rear shocks at 38k mi

I’m a bit disappointed with my 21 Toyota CH-R.
I was rotating my tires and found one of the rear shocks leaking, a bit over 38k miles on the car.

There is a creaking noise coming from the rear when the there are passengers in the rear seats, but I couldn’t track it down to anything specific. I’m hoping new shocks will solve the creaking issue.

You shouldn't have leaking shocks with that few miles on it.

Nah, no dealer is going to touch it. The OE shocks are $55 each delivered to my door from a Toyota dealer, not worth risking a screw up.

That's what I was thinking too, it might go for another 38k miles and still perform "well enough".

I would wash it really well, and see if you can actually see oil leaking after a couple hundred miles.
I'm not really seeing anything other than typical road grime, and normal levels of weepage.

If you do go that route, make sure Bilstein has fitments for the front. I don't like mixing shock/strut brands front and rear.

Yes, I agree 100%. That is normal seepage. Shock is at full droop?

I believe @AutoMechanic mentioned this as being a common problem in a post not long ago. I wonder who makes Toyota shocks - Denso?

I guess I probably need to inspect mine - 2019, 45K miles.

If it is indeed the rear shock(s) that is going bad, I would certainly stick with the OE for only $55.

It doesn’t happen with only front passengers, but with more people in the back, or something moderately heavy in the trunk, like a full size suitcase, there is a creaking sound coming from, what it seems like, the rear shock tower area.

Watch this video(CarCareNut) about shocks & struts. Sure, you may indeed have a bad OE Toyota shock. It could happen!
At 11:50 into the video, he discusses rear shocks and leaking. This may help you decide whether or not you need to replace...YET!

I have seen them stay that way for years.

No experience with shock absorbers causing a creak, sorry.

That could either be the shocks or the sway bar bushings. I have no idea if that car even has a rear sway bar, but when I have had weird suspension creaks in the rear, that has been the cause in my experience.
