208cc Briggs Stratton running poorly at high altitude

Can I (or should I) change the main jet, and by how much? Also, the idle varies by what sounds like 800-1000rpm. Kinda wants to die before spinning back up again. Seems to run okay at full throttle.

This is for a snow blower btw engine 1024 (1696610)

These 208cc Briggs horizontal shafts are just another Honda gx200 clone like the predator 212 so any jets for those will fit, and the model numbers are a bit wonky compared to normal BS ones
Usually Briggs & Stratton will have a designated high altitude pilot jet for each carburetor. That's what I was getting at.

Thank you everyone. Here’s what I found. The carb itself was hand tight, that probably caused some problems.

The only jet I can see here has a 80.5 on it and they are both very clean

The pilot jet for these is on top, it's a plastic insert piece. check that one, but I don't think it's going to be your issue.

If you check that and it's fine pick up that jet kit I linked and try a slightly larger one. Also make sure when you reinstall the carb you make sure the carb is gutentight.

Aren’t those asking for more gas?
If you're surging then it's likely lean. This is why you should check the pilot jet as well.

This is where I’m getting confused, those are in .32 range and mine says .85 on it
There's a different measurement here, the .85 is mm, the .32 is inches. Your current jet is a .33" which is pretty typical for a stock gx200 clone.

Has it always surged?

Not really, but I keep wondering if that loose carb shook loose and made the idle surge? It was only the idle I noticed acting weird.

Amd thank you for the jet clarification that helps a lot

surging rpm is usually caused by a LEAN condition. Is the air filter clean?
It was somewhat dirty, but the inside looked brand new. I'm beginning to thing the carb shook loose and leaned out the mixture.

I also don't think I'll bother with the main jet, the only smaller one I can find is a .32. a 3% difference.
