2025 Skyactive engine 2.5 NON turbo 0w20 vs 5w30

I would never use anything less than a 0/05-30 in an engine I want to carry me long term. A 0/5-30 will work well for you and ESP 0/5-30 is even better with its ACEA C-3 with the HTHS of 3.5 working in it for you. Wish you the very best ride and long life with your car.

Hi Fen 1, I just looked up pennzoil ultra platinum, which i used and its only 3.0 HTHS whatever that means!

Curious as to why you are going with 0 30 over 5w30? Is it too cold where you are at?
Mobil 1 ESP is apparently better formulated than non-ESP variants. At least that seems to be the concensus here in BIGOT. ESP only comes in 0W-30 not in 5W-30. I live in FL so the winter rating is not relevant to me.

I've got 140K miles on my 2016 CX-5 2.5 non-turbo and it has only used X/20 oils and so far no oil related issues.

Having said that, I will be moving to X/30 oils in future. Partially because other cars I maintain use X/30.

The CX-5 is a bit louder on first warmup start. Mines a turbo, so using a 30 grade (Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0w30) and sounds the same as non turbos I’ve heard startup cold. It’s just a louder cold engine. I use the 0w-30 because of the ester content that the 5w doesn’t have. Mine seems to “like” it, and my used oil analysis seems to confirm this. I’d use it even if mine wasn’t turbo. 30 just seems like a sweet spot with many engines. Even the KONA, which calls for 0w-20, that the wife drives gets the 30.

I know I'm a bit late to this conversation.
I have a 2020 CX-5 2.5L non-turbo, and I wasn't crazy about the 0W recommendation either. for 90,000 miles I have been using Mobil 1 Ext Perf 5W 20 in mine I figured I'd split the difference between 5w30 and 0w20.
I live is northwest Florida, it is a very similar climate to Houston Texas. I have not had any issues at all.
My daily commute is 30 miles of 70+ MPH interstate highway, and 30 miles of suburban (not urban) roads. I use Purolator One filters and change my oil every 4,000 miles.

I figured I'd relate my own experience with the same engine at over 90,000 miles.

I did my first change on my Mazda CX5 non turbo at 650 miles and used Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0W20. I noticed that the engine did get louder at startup and idle, but I have noticed that same issue with Mobil in other cars as well. Tonight I changed the filter and oil again at 3600 miles with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0w20. I will see if in the morning it is any quieter or not, I could not tell with the short run to fill the filter and get the car off the ramps tonight and the hood was up. I am leery of going to a 5w30 only because I want a low volatility, high detergent oil for the GDI. Even though its not proven to help with intake valve deposits it makes me feel better.
And I did notice that even though Mazda says 4.5 qts with filter mine takes exactly 5 qts to be right at the high fill mark.
5 quarts puts my 2020 CX-5 2.5L non-turbo half way between the full and add lines.

5W-20 and 0W-20 are effectively the same viscosity at operating temperature. There’s no benefit in 5W-20, in fact sometimes 5W-20 oils are lower quality than 0W-20 oils.

Just use 5W-30 like the rest of the world does. 0W-20 is for American CAFE regulations and nothing else.

My wife’s 2015 Corolla specifies 0w-20. It is about to roll over on 200k using whatever they pour into it from the bulk tank at the Valvoline Instant Oil Change place every 5k miles or so. I’m gradually coming to the opinion that you can grab almost any reasonable oil on the shelf and be fine, so long as you keep it full and change it often.

Dont mind late! Thank you.. Im always learning and love to hear what others are doing with oil in skyactiv engines.

Much truth to this, and I believe i may ovethink oils~ :) However, i personally will NEVER take it to a quick lube place again as I have had way too many experiences with overtightened plugs, ovefilling, wrong oil etc.(not from valvoline, but other places) That aint happening. But if you found a good place that works for you, more power to you!

Wanted to follow up with this and ask you if you noticed the pennzoil any quieter than the mobil 1?

My view is not related to the climate but the fuel, ethanol in the US fuel. Mexico and the rest of the world is a different story. Yes, it is a fuel economy issue here but the whole picture is the engine and fuel is also part of the story.

5°C where I am here in Tennessee. I'll let y'all know when my engine blows up from not running 0w20.

To add to this.. my friend's 16 CX-5 2.5L non-turbo (they didn't have the turbo in this generation).. filling it up with 5qts puts the oil dipstick at 1/2 between min/max. Reading the owner's manual it talks about the oil being over the full mark! (I'm summarizing here) they basically said that if you check the oil and it's over the full mark that you need to drain it and change the oil. To me that means they knew that fuel dilution could be a problem with the direct injection engine, how else would oil get beyond the fuel level on the dipstick?!

I also believe that this is the reason why filling it with the correct amount of oil puts it halfway between min/max, easier to see if fuel dilution is increasing the oil level on the dipstick!

Oh and my friend is running 5w-30 in their engine, no issues, UOA (you can look it up) have been excellent, and the fuel economy has been very good. Between 27-29mpg's! While I was driving it, I saw 30mpg too! Most of this is highway driving but still awesome gas mileage!!

And yes it is louder when it's cold. I remember reading about how they changed the timing during cold to hurry the warm up of the catalytics. It almost sounds like a loud farting noise! lol.. or a hole in the exhaust, it only lasts about 30 seconds or so and that's in 20 degree weather here in Michigan. After that 30 seconds it's quieter again.

EDIT: 20 degrees Fahrenheit = -6.67 degrees Celsius
