I did multiple oil changes between first analysis and this one. This was 2800 miles. Each interval was Castrol EDGE Extended Performance 0w-20. I think I've finally broken-in the 3.0T enough to feel comfortable with 4K-5K OCI's.

Isn't that a 25K rated oil? I would never go anywhere close to 25K on any oil (a little over 8K was the most we've ever gone on Pennzoil Platinum and that was because the car was away at school with my daughter). If I was doing 4 to 5K OCIs I'd be happy with whatever full synthetic was on sale.

It's a crime to run 0w-20 in a Type S engine. :) Should be 0w-30 or 5w-30, which is listed as acceptable for your car sold in Mexico.

Let me rephrase your message:

Although the engineers at Acura specify that your car should use 0W20 oil, and have embossed that recommendation on the oil filler cap, I know better. You should use a thicker oil because there is a conspiracy to make you trash your engine longevity to eke out a small fuel economy benefit. To further prove my position, I would point out that thicker oils are specified in Mexico.

Let me rephrase it for you, Honda Engineers have listed the following viscosities for Acura MDX Type S in Mexico owner manual.
I can already hear excuses that in mexico oil and climate is different, carry on with your 0w-20 if it makes you happy…

How did the OLM get down to 5 % in 2,700 miles. That seems wrong. Nice vehicle, btw.
I think Blackstone misread my note. I actually changed the oil at 70%,30%,and 5%. I just didn't reset the OLM until it was flashing "oil change needed" at 5%.
I didn't want to reset it early or wait to 0%.
So I changed the oil a little earlier because of the reset.
My other changes were around 4500 miles.
This Acura OLM would go around 8000-9000 miles before it signals an oil change.

I think Blackstone misread my note. I actually changed the oil at 70%, 30% and then at 5%. I just happened that I was at 2800 miles when the "oil change needed" warning finally showed up at the 5% mark. Instead of reseting the OLM and changing later at 4000, I changed early. The other (untested) changes were around 3000-4000 miles each. This Acura OLM system sould let me go 8000-9000 miles before it called for an oil change. I will probably use the 50% mark for future changes. This will probably be around 4500 miles.

I guess you’ve never been an engineer at a business.

Sometimes you have to specify less than ideal items because of realities of business that you cannot control.

Here is a link to download owner manual in Mexico for Acura MDX Type S
https://www.honda.mx/acura/mantenimiento#manuales

The American Acura owner manual recommends and not specifies oil viscosity. Go read it again.
Those words mean the same thing in this context. You hoped and thought I had used the word required. I acknowledge that recommendations are different in Mexico, much as malaria prevention is more of an issue in sub Saharan Africa.

Thank you for explaining. I think you’ll do fine with this strategy. I find the OLM to be a little opaque, but definitely look at changing oil at 5k or thereabouts or at 20 to 30 OLM percent on my high mileage MDX. I use mid tier oil (GTX, Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, Quaker State. )
