2023 Mazda 3 S Preferred - Need another Key Fob

Picked up a 2023 Mazda 3 S Preferred last night. 4,158 miles. It was a dealer service loaner vehicle. Got a great deal on it, but they only gave me 1 key fob...

Sales guy wasn't too interested in getting me another one and said he would "try." I also talked to the business guy I signed papers with and he said he wouod get me another one. Who knows?

If it falls through, does anyone know how to do this? Do you have to go through dealership to get one? I would rather not if possible.....

Not sure of programming, etc.

Any advice I would appreciate it. My plan for the next 2 weeks is to pester the living crap out of the sales guy and the business guy.

Why? Do you want to waste their time and your time? Go straight to the GM.

Rule for next time, make this a "we owe" item as in the car must come with 2 keys.

Anyway, call your local locksmith that does this sort of thing. I'm not sure how new they can go. They have software and key fobs to do this sort of thing.

If for no other reason than to have a price to compare.

For all you know, the Mazda store has a locksmith handle this sort of thing.

It doesn't hurt to pick up the phone and make a call.

Unfortunately, if it's not down in writing then it becomes a he said/she said sort of thing. A second FOB for my '19 cx5 was around $190 from a locksmith.

It’s a little strange why such a new vehicle would only have one key fob. Was it repoed?

I would be concerned there is a key fob out there that has full access to your car. Therefore I would get the dealer to delete the missing key fob.

No, it was a dealer loaner. Car was never sold.

The business guy said service lost it......and they would have to buy me another one. This was just last night at 6PM, so if I don't hear from him today, I will call him in the morning. He gave me his card.

Ok, but still they should remove the lost key from the ECU when the program the new key. I would insist on it.

Hopefully you got that in writing. I dont know about other brands but Mazda fobs are expensive. I learned this the hard way after my daughter took off with one sitting on the back bumper. She couldnt find it and just went in and grabbed the other out of my wife's purse. I found the flattened remnants of the first one near the stop sign down the street.

On their older models if you had at least one fob, you could buy another and program it yourself with a song and dance involving the brake pedal and pushing the start button and starting the car in the right sequence. Dont know about more recent models.

I agree with having them at least remove the old one from the ECU. Someone, somewhere has that fob.

Given it was a Mazda dealer and basically a new car, I would think they would honor the deal. I bet they get you another key.

My local Ace Hardware cut and programmed a new keyfob for our 2005 Jeep, took about 15 minutes.

Hope your experience is better than my Nissan. Locksmith wasn’t able to program an intelligent key. I am forced to take it to the dealer for $280 for a new fob and $186 for programming. So dumb. My ‘91 does not have this sort of issue.

UPDATE: Talked to my sales guy and he said if I brought in a key, he would give me a $20 discount. So $169 for key cut and FOB programmed. I wasn't thrilled, but needed it and was tired of dealing with it. Went to eBay and looked up the exact part number inside cover of my FOB. Made sure the listing FCC and IC numbers matched. Paid $25 shipped to my house. Had an appointment this morning. They cut the key and programmed the FOB. Worked perfectly. Went to pay and they handed me the invoice and said have a nice weeked. NO CHARGE!

So my sales guy took care of it (said so on invoice.) A bit of a goat rope to have to jump through hoops, but got a spare key and FOB for $25.

Very good, that's the protocol for lost key fobs. Good to hear they programmed and cut the key for free.
