2019 Ram Starter Motor

Went to fire it up this morning and click, just a single click. Battery is less than a year old, so I figured it couldn’t be that, plus all lights came on. Grabbed a hammer and whacked the starter a couple times and it fired right up.

Little disappointed that it did this at only 109k miles.

So which starter to buy. I don’t really care where it comes from, looking for a good piece, and will pay for it but not waste fully. I’m not seeing the Mopar as an option based on cost, $300-350, unless there’s a really good reason for it.

I’m aiming to do this Saturday. Hopefully it’ll last til then and I’m keeping a hammer in the truck for the time being. It’ll definitely only get drive to work duty. Replacement looks really easy based on AllData, .9 warranty hrs.

I know it might not be what you’re looking for but if you can find an auto electric shop nearby and have them rebuild it this week, that would probably be economical and also a better option in terms of quality.
While I’m not opposed to rebuilding what I have. I need the truck during the week, this week or next week. If I take it out, I’ll need a rental.

I will search around and see if there are any in my home/work area.
 
What do we know about TYC to justify that?

If not boschnreman, I’d be interested in what we know of remy… otherwise, probably carquest new…
Just my personal anecdote

I've had multiple failed TYC alternators, blower motors, and cooling fans
The alternator worked for ~30 minutes and 1 mile before not charging 🙁

I did get a good starter out of them, I'll give them that
I preferred the finish and feel of a Bosch reman alternator I put in a Taurus, unfortunately it got totaled before I could benchmark durability

See if your starter is repairable (if possible)
 
If you can find the parts, open it up and you'll probably find a smoking gun.

I had a thread for sources here, and I half-*** rebuilt my wife's alternator summer of '23. It's been great ever since (shrug)

I definitely screwed up the pricing for Advance and Auto Zone last night, because of the core haha. A couple by a little, couple by a lot.

Refurb quality or longevity?

Price shown is super cheap. That’s why I ask. It doesn’t seem like any rebuilds are truly reputable…
Yeah, after the OE starter on my dad's Expedition died after ~18 years, he went through 5x reman starters from NAPA in the following 6.
 
While the pricing sucks, I would go Mopar...get another 109k miles out of it. You know we've gotten to a good point when we get upset that a starter only lasts 109k miles...but I understand it, I've had them routinely last for 200k+

See, what's amazing is that if you bought a kit and watched a video you could probably do a far better job yourself.

These things aren't exactly rocket science. There's a few moving parts and a few key electrical parts, and that's it. You should even be able to crudely test a starter on the bench with a 12V battery (not under load of course but if it kicks in, it probably works)

The one gotcha for alts is the need for a chassis iron, but I don't think starters need this level of soldering?

Yeah, I've rebuilt antique boat starters back when I was a kid. I don't think my dad had any interest in learning how to rebuild one though, just wanted a reliable replacement and apparently OE Ford wasn't available anymore, so he had this circus instead.

Definitely a fair point.

While, I'm still young (40), I've driven my share of miles and I've only replaced one starter which was on a 20 year old Monte Carlo SS.
 
and for me I only had one bad TYC part, hvac blower fan began making noise, warranty was simple to replace the bad part. TYC alternator (11 years until car was totaled), a/c condenser fan, headlights (capa certified(, all great parts never an issue. But then again most didn't come from Rockauto all beat up as RA seems to do (which I gave up on them for that).

So I say there's nothing bad about buying TYC, I'd do it again if I needed a part they made. (y)

Get any starter you're comfortable with, and have the old one rebuilt. keep it on a shelf. no rental needed and you have 2 starters for possibly $200.
