2019 and up Volkswagen GLI EA888 - blowing smoke/valve stem seals, etc

You guess my thoughts. FB and X? 🤭🫣

Remember there is no "GLI engine". It's the same as on GTIs, several Audis, Seats,
Cupras and Skodas, even basically the same as on Golf R, Arteon, Tiguan R, Audi
TTS and S3 and many many more, more to count. IF the GLI had this issue they all
would suffer from the same problem - what they apparenty don't.

Keep driving and enjoy.
.
I mean I'm in FB groups with 20K people for the MK7 and MQBs, read about the puff of smoke once in a while but certianly not common.

I owned a mk 7.5 gti and a mk3 TTs, both Apr tuned. Never had puff of smoke, turbo issues, etc. Worst thing was the TTs diamond stitching snagged and Audi fixed it under warranty.

Just because a dedicated internet forum talks about an issue, doesn’t mean it’s wide spread or “known”.
And people often lie about their use habits/maintenance or just don’t mention them. So they report the problem, whine about dealer help but fail to mention the beat the snoot out of the car, or don’t let it warm up fully before doing so, etc.

If you don’t have this issue, don’t get angry at VW preemtively.

The issue is way overblown. Half of the people I know personally with "bad seals" fixed the problem with a fresh PCV.

GLI engine is hecho in Mexico. GTI engine still made in Hungary last I heard. Very possibly different component suppliers.

Wife has a ‘22 GLI with 26k miles. No issue (at least not yet).

More likely a materials issue with supplier of the valve stem seals. Is this also happening with the Audi variant?
its happening in many older bmws like mine.i dont think oil grade is the issue.they told me that its coming probably from longlife OCI but i never did one and i have the same problem.so it must be a random problem or some kind of bad quality seals, or a usual replacement part job for bmw.but its not the oil grade maybe bad quality or longer oci might contribute to worsen it.

Hi everyone,
In the past few months there have been numerous posts on various social media platforms detailing issues of the GLI engine emitting puffs of blue oil burning smoke upon start up. We are talking about cars with less than 72,000 miles, in some cases less than 20,000 miles.
At this point most of the impacted cars are still under warranty, so of course the owners have reported the issue to the dealer.

As you may have predicted, there has been a wide range of responses from the dealers. It seems that most of the dealers are following the Volkswagen modus operandi of not wanting to fix the issue and claiming "can not duplicate customer concern"......even with video evidence. Some of the dealers have initiated an "oil consumption" test, then claim the car is not losing oil so it's not an issue.

With that said a few dealers have actually attempted to fix the issue. The "fix(s)" have been new valve stem seals, a new head, and in one case a new oil separator. It seems like there is no real answer as to why this is happening. And there does not seem to be a connection to the cars that are "tuned", although that would void the warranty anyway.

This issue is relatively new and I don't predict that it will get better with age. I assume that VW wants to "run out the clock" on the warranties so that can weasel out of fixing the issue.

With all of the above being said, does the collective think this issue might be related to the 0w20 508 requirement? I don't think earlier iterations of this engine had/have the same issue, but they run 5w40.

Any thoughts?

Currently going through this. Started at 20k miles. After putting on aftermarket exhaust. It was more noticeable. Taken into dealership. Coolant consumption test was done. Was told it has to get worse before they would proceed. Waiting a few months. Tried again. Oil consumpiton test. All things are in spec. Car still smokes on every warm start. Big puff. I can show videos. As of today after emailing back and forth. They have agreed to a compression test. As long as I pay half of the bill. If the test passes. If it fails. It’s free and they will proceed with repairs.

Not exactly the same, but apparently a big issue on these is the oil separator in the PCV system. Just dropped out Atlas CS off with 29k miles on it with oil coming out of it everywhere. When this part fails it allows boost pressure into the crankcase, so not ideal.

The shop manager said he had one come in with a blown out oil pan gasket, I suspect ours is similar.

That is an issue specific to the newer Atlas/Tig - the MK7 and this GLI don't suffer that issue with the prior gen EA888.3 2.0s. I hvae a buddy that is a VW tech, he was telling about this problem.

PCV was always somewhat of an issue.

Ah interesting, this specific issue only applies to this spec 2.0. I did see a lot of PCV issues regarding the GTI/GLI etc. The shop foreman had a lot of stories to tell. Taos 1.5 head gaskets, these 2.0s.... good time to make money if you're a VW tech.

But this is a different specific issue that the new Venturi-driven PCVs fail causing over-pressure of the crankcase on the newer 4 cylinder turbos.
So it was an issue for the EA888.1 and 2, "fixed" for the EA888.3, and now once again is common on the EA888.4? I don't understand why VW would change the design again on the newer ones if they finally ironed it out on the gen 3. I still plan to replace mine in as preventative maintenance on my GLI when I hit 60k on the odo.

The changes are driven with desire to limit IVD. They could go dual injection like on some engines in Europe. However, Dieselgate made VW cheapen out on a lot of stuff.

IIRC EA888.4 is 24+

23 and older Atlas/Tiguan is IS20 turbo, some other differences but still a gen 3.

B/c the gen 3 does have issues, but not this issue. I run the MK8 (current gen) PCV on my MK7 EA888.3 1.8 with a venturi for the specific issue of eliminating smoking on track in high-g/track conditions. The MK7 valve is pretty good overall but the MK8 seems to be better and maintains a vacuum on the crankcase over a wider variety of conditions including the more extreme ones, but like anything, there can be issues. So far so good w/r to smoking or any odd oil consumption on track but my MK7 "BL" revision PCV did the same thing. I had issues with my original "AP" revision PCV - gettng Spy Hunter smoke screen coming out of T1 at VIR...my buddy behind me backed off b/c he thought a blew my motor 🤣 🤣 🤣 nope...just MK7 PCV things!

In before I get feedback on my YouTube videos, how I produce them, how I look/talk, my content quality, etc. ;)

If anyone is interested in total-nerd levels of info/data on VW EA888.3/MK7 PCVs, check out datadrivevnmqb.com. His videos are long and detailed so the pendantic BITOG crew should love them.

didn't know you had a youtube channel ..nice work man!
Thanks! Don't forget to smash that like and subscribe!

I only need a few '00 more watch hours and I'm monetized...have the 1000 sub hurtle cleared. Then I can really shill for some brands, spread false information, and trick people into watching with click-bait titles! :ROFLMAO:

I'm always leaving a playlist on loop when I'm not at my computer of some of my videos to up my hours....HAHAHA
