If the Volt a good deal why do I have to help people with enough money to buy one by giving them up to $7.5K federal tax credit and a $1.5K California tax credit?

Do they load it up with features to keep the price up to try to recover some of their lost production costs?

A Volt owner told me not to complain because the tax credits were from the government and that meant they were free.

Sounds like another educated idiot.

Since the government can print as much money as they want, they are free!

Federal tax credit of $7,500 is if your tax liability is at least $7,500.

If your tax liability is less than $7,500 then that is the amount you can get from Federal government.

I don't know how California rebate for EV work.

So, the high earners can get full benefit of $7,500 for buying EV from Federal government, the middle class and lower class either have smaller credit or none at all.

Why is California so cheap? Here in Colorado we get about $4k in state tax reduction alone for buying an electric. BTW, this thread is about the Bolt, not the Volt. Volt is a hybrid.

My '16 Ford Focus Electric does come standard with a few luxury options, so I think you're generally right. Leather seats, nav, backup camera, etc.

Car dealers have a bit of a hard time selling electrics now (unless you're a dealer in Boulder Colorado where hard-core environmentalists high on marijuana abound). My recent electric car purchase was so easy, even had Ford rebates of $3.5k. The Bolt may be different though. Its range is high, and its very fast, so it'll sell. And car testers have already given its first iteration, the Spark, first place in a comparo: http://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/2014-chevrolet-spark-ev-page-7 so the Bolt's fun-to-drive quotient must be off-the-charts.

SUV-like vehicle with 200 miles of range and a price tag around $40k before rebates? Not bad, not bad...

Which model ? Model S or X or 3 ?

Tesla doesn't participate CES in Vegas, they stand alone and supposed to have Model 3 in prototype form(s) available by March this year and in production by 2017.

Rumor is that Model 3 can have more than 1 version, a compact sedan and a compact SUV.

I saw one of these on the way to dinner tonight, and all I can say is WOW!

I was referring to the Model 3 which GM seemed to beat them to the punch - an affordable EV for the masses.

GM employs more than 20-30 times Tesla's employees. Tesla doesn't have enough engineers and cash flow to design/engineer more than 1 vehicle at a time, may be they can do that in the future but not now.

As of now Tesla have enough assembly workers and equipment to make about 1,000 vehicle a week, while GM can produce more than 50,000 a week easily.

One thing that Tesla should be given credit for is the batteries are laying flat on the floor on Model S and X and 3(supposedly), other EV's didn't do it only now Bolt has the same battery layout, I would say GM copy the battery layout from Tesla. Remember that Tesla open their patents for anyone to copy and use.

I saw one few days ago, it is smaller than I expected.

The styling is okay, at least it isn't as ugly as BMW I3.

Whatever you'd call a Fit/Soul/Encore. I'd say 5 door hatch.

And apparently not available until 2018.
