What is the diference between ACDelco 104017 transfer case fluid and ACDelco 104034 transfer case fluid. Are they interchangable.

104017 is autotrack 2 transfer case fluid while the other is gear oil with limited slip additive meant for differentials and some manual transmissions and some transfer cases though the manual transmissions and transfer cases that call for something like 104034 are usually the very old ones, single speed units not usually the 2 speed ones, or the heavy duty ones that call for a thicker oil and are typically not to be used in light duty applications unless it calls for it.

Autotrack 2 has a viscosity of 7 cst which is like a 20 grade oil while 75w-90 is twice that if not a little more at times so it's like a 40 grade and almost a low end 50 grade oil. That could have an effect in something like a light transfer case. The additive packs are likely to be different as well. The owners manual should tell you what it wants in the fluids section. It should be the autotrack 2 but double check nonetheless.

Using rock auto for either the 2.0 or 2.5 it says to use this instead being 104105 which is odd but it does say ptu fluid which is for transfer cases and it's also a gl5 75w-90. Perhaps you should use that 75w-90. Oddly it only says it's to be used in 2011+ manual transmissions which never call for any limited slip additive though it usually doesn't hurt to have it anyway but this doesn't seem to have any limited slip additive so i wonder if rock auto is wrong. Even if it's the right stuff the fluid rock auto has is just overpriced. Maybe use mobil 1 75w-90 LS.

Thank you javierH19. I’m going with 104017. Owners manual does not state what to use. If it does they are hiding it pretty good. Just an aside. I have a minor leak in the transfer case seal to rear drive shaft (a few drops per week) GM dealership told me rubber o-ring type seal can’t be replaced. They want to replace transfer case $2500. Can I add Blue Devil seal sealer? 1ounce per quart

That is interesting. These Buick Envisions must have a fancier AWD system. I would have figured they had the same AWD system as the Equinox, etc. The t-case/PTU on those just take 75w90 gear oil and very easy to drain/fill. Same with the rear carriers.

By minor leak you mean like a tiny spot under the car or do you mean no spot underneath but you see seepage and the dirt it attracts. If you have a spot leak or a lot of seepage I think using blue devil transmission sealer could be ok.

If it's only seeping a little bit I think I'd just opt to add more once a year. Blue devil also has a "Permanent Oil Leak Sealer" but I have no idea about that though. I'm not sure how much their transmission sealer and rear main sealer differ. The seals are usually the exact same material. 1oz of trans seal per quart is fine.

Thanks for input. I’m going to find out how hard it is to drain and fill this weekend. Also how thick the fluid is.

Keep us posted. Hope it's easy for ya.

For the 2018+ equinox, you have to remove a few 10mm bolts to move a heat shield out of the way to gain better access to the fill/level check plug, but the drain plug is right out in the open. I used valvoline 75w90 in the squeeze bags for easy re-filling. The rear carrier/diff is super easy access. The 2018+ equinox and traverse use a wet clutch of sorts at the input of the rear diff to turn "awd" on/off. The wet clutch fluid is pentosin CHF 11s, which is easy to drain/fill too.

Ok sorry it took so long to reply. For my 2017 buick envision awd 2.0 turbo. The transfer case did take AC delco 10-4017. Color and viscosity confirmed. I added Blue devil crankcase seal. It appears leaked stopped. 2 oz / qt. Removed 18 oz. It only took 24 oz. ( pint and a half). Till overflow. Today I replaced rear pumpkin fluid. Removed 20oz. It took a full bottle of AC delco 10-4034. One liter. (1.05 qt) plus an ounce or so from a new bottle. What happened to the other 15-16 ounces? Or was it never there. Hope this helps someone. A little help from GM would have been nice.

Wanted to add to this thread for whoever finds it, the transfer case fluid in my 2017 Buick Envision 2.0T AWD was NOT factory filled with Auto Trak II/automatic transmission fluid like this thread suggests. Opened the fill plug and it smelled and looked like gear oil.

Called the Buick dealer, gave them the vin and they said it takes .69 quarts of AC Delco 19351882 10-4105 "GL-5 75W-90 Synthetic Power Transfer Unit (PTU) Lubricant". This fluid is around $100/quart from GM.

After some research, GL-5 75W-90 synthetic gear oil seems to be the replacement for this fluid, the dealership doesn't even keep this $100/quart fluid in stock. I was able to fit about .8 quarts to fill, used Pennzoil Platinum GL-5 75W-90.

The manual doesn't state what kind of fluid to use in the transfer case/rear differential of this car, I would suggest to call the dealer to confirm. My rear differential was slightly underfilled from factory like others have mentioned.
