Hi,
This is the first time I am doing oil changes on my own with a new vehicle. I have been reading a bit about the opinions here and hoping I can have a bit of clarification. The manual calls for 5.1 quarts of oil, but the Mobil 1 is available in a 5 quart jug. Am I ok with using the 5 quarts, or if I open an additional quart, can I use the remainder of it later, about 6 months later and it will be ok?

Also, is there a suggestion for a good oil filter for me. Should I stick with the Stock subaru filter, or will I be served better using a Wix, Napa Gold, or other filter?

Last question, not too much on the top of oil, but about air/cabin filters. When I replace these, is it better to use OEM or which route should I go. I heard some cabin filters can be so thick to impede the ac/heat systems from working on lower fan speeds and needing an increase in the fan speed to maintain the same temperature as before.

Thanks for the help guys, sorry for the same questions that have been answered a hundred times over. Have a great day.

you're perfectly okay using 5 quarts. don't sweat it.

the tokyo roki filters are good. nothing wrong with using a wix/gold/etc however.

subaru OEM air filter/cabin can be had on amazon for the same price as aftermarket, however if you need to buy local, FRAM air/cabin filters are good.

Edit: also thank you for buying a Subaru and helping me keep my job(i work subaru)

I wouldn't worry about 1/10th of a quart. But if you want to top it off, the oil will be OK for 6 months.

WIX, NAPA Gold, Subaru, Fram Ultra, all would be OK choices. If it is new, I would recommend using Subaru to avoid warranty dispute.

Again, I would stick to Subaru until warranty out. I have 2 cars with Cabin filters. Don't use the OEM. I use MANN active charcoal filters, but they are out of warranty, and MANN probably makes the MB filter anyways.

Good luck, and Welcome to BITOG!

No Problem, I am loving my Outback. So I googled the Tokyo Roki filters and cant find ones for my 2015 Outback, seems the pressure relief ratings are 7-9, the outback needs 23.1 psi.

Thank you very much, appreciate the welcome. I am excited to start working on the car myself. I am glad its a top mounted oil filter, and with my new Fumoto Valve, I wont have to even jack the car up. Looks like I will probably end up Mobil 1 AFE.

Is it safe to change up oil brands regularly if things are on sale, or better to run one type of oil? I plan on driving this car into the ground so longevity is my main concern. Thanks again.

I would be interested in how the Fumato valve goes on the Subaru 2.5 engine. There is a little cutout for the drain plug in the plate on the bottom that protects the engine. The valve has to thread in OK, the handle has to work properly and the oil when draining has to flow down, not across the hole in the plate.

Im on my mobile so cant post link but ebay " 2015 outback oil filter" and look for the 4cyl filters
Theres a 3 pack at the top

oh ok, you mean the blue filter. I can pick them up for 6 dollars a piece at the local dealer. I thought you meant the black tokyo roki filters. Thanks

From what I read on the Outback forums, it is an easy fit without issue. F-108 valve is what everyone has been using. No modifications needed.

Buy a topside oil extractor (about the same cost as a fumitsu), so you don't need to go under the car at all!

I would stick with the OEM Subaru filter because for valve and psi reasons (NAPA Gold meets the OEM specs as well). But, the Subie filters are significantly cheaper compared to other filters when you buy in bulk (6 or 12 at a time) and they are made in the US (so you are supporting American industry).

I added 5.2 quarts because I needed to change out original filter at a later time.

5.1 Quarts should be fine, but I've read that people just buy the 5 qt jug and don't bother with the 1/10 of a quart. I'd rather play it safe at the end of the day, even if it is completely unnecessary.

Make sure you also dab your (gloved) hand in some fresh oil and rub it around the new oil filter gasket as well.

Also, just a heads up, the factory oil filters are fastened down very tight, so you may or may not need a tool to get it off. Check out the Lisle oil filter tool if it's stuck on really tight. Got it off in about three seconds!

---

On a side note, if you ever replace the engine filter, ensure that you buy a dry filter. Filters coated with oil are a disaster for Subies!

But you are talking about cabin filters, so I digress.

Don't sweat the small stuff. Go with five quarts even; Subaru, Wix or Fram Ultra oil filters and the cheapest cabin filter you can find.

I used a Wix oil filter for my first change, Subaru OEM for the second, but will use a Fram Pro Synthetic for the third. My Outback spends most miles in NC and FL. Will be using 5w-20 next OC rather than 0w-20. After 14K miles, mine uses zero oil.

Just curious, why are you going to use a Fram Pro Synthetic, just want to know if it's something I should consider on a future OC.

Because its the twin sister of the Fram Ultra and I got a case of six for $5.99 apiece on eBay.

Do you still need crush washers in addition to the Fram ultra? I saw a pack of 6 for 39.99 on there.

I'd use Wix or Napa Gold, both are made by Wix and really high quality. Pretty sure Subaru oil filters are pretty cheaply made. Never opened one up but the ones I've taken off of customer's cars are pretty chintzy and cheaply made. You can tell by looking at a Wix or Napa Gold that they are a sturdy, quality built filter. Opening one up further reveals they are a great choice.

Yes, always replace the crush washer every time or it'll leak.

So if I buy a wix or Napa gold, do they come with crush washers or is this something I have to buy somewhere? Sorry this is my first time.
