2015 Mazda 6 first oil change

My 2015 Mazda 6 had about 4800+ miles on it when I had the dealer do the first oil change. I moved to Phoenix a while back and purchased the car new here. While I would normally, always, do oil/filter changes myself, the dealer gave me the first change free. Because it is dusty here in AZ and temperatures vary greatly, a OCI of either 4 months or 5K miles be adhered to. The dealer invoice stated they used Castrol Edge 0W-20. I know Mazda is adamant about recommending the Mazda-branded oil as it has lots of Moly in it. I'm not concerned but they did over-fill the crankcase by a good 1/2" over the top mark on the dipstick. A veteran mechanic friend of mine said it is not enough to cause an issue - frothing, etc.

What are others with the Skyactiv engines using in their vehicles? I assumed that because the engine uses such a high compression ratio, 13:1, that using the proper oil is crucial. Thanks.

Congrats on the new purchase! We have a 2014 CX5 Skyactiv with 9k miles. The car is currently running Pennzoil Platinum 0w20 with Fram Ultraguard oil filter. So far so good. Some say to use Mazda 0W-20 with moly and others say any 0W-20 will do. Our local Mazda dealer doesn't stock Mazda 0W-20 with moly and it costs $9.00/quart.

I will be running Pennzoil Platinum 0w20 until I run out of my PP stock.

At first I didnt care for the 6's styling but lately the more I look at it the more I like the uniqueness. Camry's and Altimas are everywhere. 6's are more unique. Good purchase. I love their fuel efficiency as well, but one question. How come the 2015's epa rating is slightly lower than 2014?

Not sure why the EPA rating would be lower. Perhaps it's an adjustment based on more "real world" results. I wasn't sure I would like the new generation 6 as they dropped the V6 option. Once I sat in it though, I knew I had to have one. I absolutely LOVE the car; everything about it - even the "on the small side" nav system. Accords and Camrys are not to my liking - no personality. It's a real shame that so many aren't even aware of Mazda's offerings. They go directly for the Accord or Camry; pity.

The manual for my 2013 Mazdaspeed 3 ( which also covers the Skyactive engines ) referred to Castrol as a preferred lubricant in addition to Mazdas branded oil. The next oil change in the Speed will be Castrol Edge beings Mazda likes it.
