Hi all. We have lost one set of keys/fob for our truck. Dealers want $550 to $650 to replace them, including programming. I see online replacements for the key as low as $8. These would require cutting and programming. Programming seems simple, insert original key (which we have), turn on, remove key, insert new key, turn on, replacement should work. Cutting may be $20 or so. There are replacement fobs which can be had with a programmer for $60 or so. So, obviously, the aftermarket is much cheaper. I'm trying to decide if it is worth it to go with a dealer or take a chance with aftermarket. The replacements would be used only occasionally for back ups mostly. Any advice?

I have had a couple of GM key fobs replaced by my trusted locksmith for $125 to $150. Suggest you find and price a locksmith in your area to find out what the costs in your area may be. There is nothing unique about the GM key fobs that justify the extra dealer cost.
Did you buy it new, and keep the key code stickers that were on the keys when you picked it up?
If not, go to your dealers parts counter with title + proof of ownership, and get the keycode
Now you can order keys precut online off some eBay seller
Many offer a key by photo service, if they approved it you're ready to program out the mailbox

You need two functional keys to do the quick key add, if you're down to one, you've gotta do the 10 + 10 minute method

I used the $8 ebay key on my WT trim 08 silverado, and the key-in, key-out method. Worked fine. You should at least get another key made, worry about the fob maybe later.
Local hardware store cut my key for free (!) since I didn't buy a blank, so I gave a couple bucks to Jerry's kids.

So I replaced the ignition key with one from Ace hardware. $80 + tax after a "bucket sale" 20% discount. It's a little longer than the original and the shift lever barely clears it but it works fine. Ace included the key, cutting and programming. The fob I got from Amazon for $65 + tax. It came with a programmer. Programming was easy but it erases the programming of the original fob so you have to reprogram it too. The programmer is only good for the vehicle it's first used on and only will work for a total of 4 fobs. The new fob looks and feels like the original and works fine, so far.
