Thank you all for the comments. I’m looking at running Valvoline XL-III 5w-30 euro with the SP rating soon.
Try using Oil Analysers, WearCheck, or TestOil instead of Blackstone. Get a real fuel dilution reading, not a fake estimate.
I wouldn’t try to dissuade you from a euro oil. People seem to give this engine a pass on thin oil, given other iterations of it spec’d xw-20, but IMHO you will be happier long term with something that keeps its viscosity within the 30 grade at the UOA. The way to achieve that is probably thicker oil to begin with, though several ways to achieve that: Euro, Hi Mileage, xw-40, or certain Boutique oils. I’m not a true “thickie,” I just PERSONALLY think, if the engineers want 30 grade, then you should choose an oil that stays in 30 grade. Pennzoil’s various Platinums (not their Euro), start at the bottom of the 30 grade, and any dilution or shearing takes them down out of grade. So try the Pennzoil Euro 5w30…or the Valvoline Euro, or Mobil 1 euro 0w40, or Castrol 5w30 Euro. Or something more exotic. But don’t accept Blackstone telling you there is no fuel, or Pennzoil telling you their USA oil is a 5w-30. Of course, if you only do short trips in interior Canada winters, Pennzoil may make perfect sense.
Not to diss
@SubieRubyRoo, but his engine is a newer generation (gen2) of the EB3.5, with port injection added to the direct injection (only) that plagues certain gen1 engines (like yours and mine). Maybe your gen1 isn’t plagued by fuel dilution. If so, jump for joy! Mine is.
