Looking to add 4th vehicle to fleet.

A great condition 2014 Acura MDX AWD came up with 120k and likely can purchase for just under $10k. I don’t know about timing belt however just had my 15 Pilot done for under $800 with a connection.

I am hoping it really manages 28 mpg highway as I would use for commute highway occasionally with 100 mile round trip. Commute is 12k/year (26 weeks hybrid situation).

My outlook is 3-4 years with it(get kids through college). Although said that with 15 Pilot picked up just after Covid shutdown and still have it.

Any thoughts?

I don't see it getting any better mileage than the Pilot, it is basically the same vehicle in a pretty wrapper. That's a good deal though.

Sure, why not?
They're a great vehicle when you find one in the condition that you've stated.
Go over the vehicle thoroughly and maybe even with a mechanic/friend so you
can catch possible issues and plan for their repair(s) and it should serve you well.

I think transmission is 6 speed instead of 5 speed auto coupled to less boxy which yields 3-4 mpg better on highway.

The J35Y5 is a reliable stout engine. Other than timings belts, look for carbon buildup as certain models had cylinders deactivation (vcm).

I have a 2014 with 95k on it. I'd say unlikely on 28 mpg. I can get 25 mpg all day long having SH-AWD if it's not windy...pretty awesome for a 290hp brick. Transmission is the Honda H6, needs fluid changed every 25k or so to stay happy but it's easier than changing the oil.

Do you know what the build date is? Base, tech, or advance? Also, what color? No DI-related issues for me on this engine with carbon, fuel dilution, etc. although I've run a VCM Tuner II on it since I bought mine at 70k. This is seen by most as overkill for this generation of VCM though as they really have had no documented issues of oil consumption, carbon buildup, etc.

His Pilot is a generation older than the MDX...the 2016+ Pilot is the brother of the 2014+ MDX. The MDX is DI and the Pilot is not, so that on top of the aero benefits will make a noticeable difference in consumption.

Highway MPG for commute, I manage >= EPA numbers on all my cars with commute. Around town I would expect under 20 mpg .
I do too so you must be mostly highway or egg under the go pedal. Sounds like it could work out for you then. That crossover does look nice.

If MPG's are important, my 2021 Pilot hit 30 mpg indicated on a couple of 200-300 mile trips during Summer months. During freezing weather it's close to 26 mpg with the ZF 9 speed automatic.
