2013 VW Beetle TDI

Yesterday my aunt just bought a brand new red 2013 VW Beetle TDI, it came with 3 years/36,000 miles free maintenance. She has a 2004 TDI Beetle as well with 151k miles, always dealer maintained and this one will be as well, there's no changing her mind. She has always done 10k mile OCI with synthetic, with this new one is there anything else to look for and to maintain?

If she does not have the MT, she will be looking at a transmission fluid service that is $$$ every 40k.

I think the fuel filter needs to be done at a fairly early mileage, but should be no different than before.

The fuel filter interval is the same for her old Beetle as it is for her new one - 20,000 miles.

The DSG transmission does require a fluid/filter change every 40,000 miles. Of course this doesn't apply if she didn't get the DSG transmission. I've seen prices for the fluid change range from $280 - $480 in price so it pays to check around.

I think the new New Beetles look pretty cool.

I think a lot of dealers are learning they have to be fair or people stop using them

Glad to see VW offering the Beetle w/ a TDI option again. 2007 - 2012 they didn't after switching to the common rail injection design. My wife had a 2005 Beetle TDI 5-speed manual. That thing loved the interstate, cruise ctrl would hold speed precisely through all sorts of ascents and descents, hills or I-77 through the Appalachians. And rack up 48mpg the whole time @ 75mph. Miss that car.

The 2004 gets 39-40 consistently in traffic or city/freeway driving and is not driven lightly. On the road it gets 38-40 because its usually at 85 mph or so, and at a more reasonable speed it gets about 45 on the road.

The 2013 we're not sure, it's had about 60 miles put on it

The 2004 climbs the hills effortlessly, and the 2013 so far has much more power

How is the 2013's interior as far as rattles and resonating plastic-on-plastic sounds? Her 2005 sort of had a symphony of various interior plastic buzzes and rattles that would happen around 2000 - 2500 rpm, which was peak torque range for that 1.9L TDI powerplant. Sold that car last year to a guy on tdiclub.com who at last count was loving it. I used 505.01 oil religiously through the end of warranty, then switched to Rotella T6 Full Synthetic 5W40. AFAIK the new owner still runs the Rotella T6 in it. Are they still spec'ing 5W30 507.00 oil in the common rail engines?

The 2013's interior is amazing, comfortable and soooo quiet. It really shows the difference to the 2004 which the door panels and other panels rattle like crazy. The 2004 sounds like a Caterpillar tractor compared to the 2013. The 2013 has slightly less head room but is absolutely not a problem, it's more spacious inside and the trunk is very big (for a beetle). I'm not sure what they spec for the oil on the 2013 but she refuses to go anywhere but the dealer and her service guy treats her very well, very honest.

Stop it you're making me want one again. Your post alone was enough to send me to the VW site to have a a look at the updated interior. Very nice. Instrument panel and entire dash is much improved. I could see long trips being very comfortable in this car.

Haha, well it had a great sticker price of about $25k and after every fee, tax, and interest with an extended warranty and gap insurance it was 30,950 or so and payments are around $575 so if you have the means, it's an awesome car
