2013 Civic and oil filter?

Hi,

I am about to do my first oil/filter change for my 2013 Honda Civic EX with 5240 miles. I really am reluctant to use the dealer and would prefer to use my trusted shop. How sensitive
are the new Civics to using Non OEM oil filters?

I ask this because I know my last car, a 2006 Hyundai Elantra, was particular about only using
their OEM Hyundai oil filter.

I'm sure it will be fine with an aftermarket filter. Dealers and manufacturers are programmed to scare you into thinking that you must use their parts, but you don't have to. I've been using Bosch in my CR-V.

The biggest difference for OEM Honda filters and many other Asian vehicles is that they favor flow over filtration.
This approach isn't an issue in a clean and well maintained vehicle.
If you check out this site on the testing of various oil filters, flow and filtration, it will aid in what ever choice you make.
I wouldn't be concerned about your dealer doing the oil change, unless you've had bad experiences in the past with them. The Honda A02 is a capable filter and made for 2 OCI's.

I would use Pennzoil Platinum 0w20 and a Fram orange can. The Honda filter is just like a Fram orange can you get at Walmart. If they don't have the Fram use a Purolator Classic. Hondas use cheap filters. PP will keep that thing clean as a whistle and you'll get 300k out of it.

If Honda truely does use cheap filters, is it worth it to step up to a better quality filter, or are the Civics really not that particular with oil filters and it doesn't matter
what filter you use?
Are the Wix or Bosch filters any better than the OEM honda and is it really worth it?

Tried most of the aftermarket stuff (Honda wont sell you a Japanese OEM filter for my fit!) Settled on the WX 57356. Base end bypass, tough media and construction. I Prefer the ACDELCO (Champion Labs) part for asll seasons (even with the nitrile adbv) but cant locate it lately.

Hponda uses mostly the same part(filter) for all engines and many Nissan and Subaru too. a SUBARU Tokyoroki filter may be worth lokiing into

The Honda A02 is nothing special and like others said, basically a repackaged Fram filter. That being said, I would continue using it while under warranty just in case an issue arises. That's what I'm doing with my '13 Pilot.

I would personally stick to Honda branded filters or aftermarket made by the company that makes the Honda ones whilst under warranty.

Honda in the UK was one manufacturer that left a filter in place for 2 ocis.

Fram not widely available in the UK.

Only real choice for Japanese cars is Japanpart, Blueprint or OE.

have to worry do much about the filter than.

With 0W20, 5k OCIs are unnecessary. Just follow the OLM and depending on your driving style, expected OCIs will be in the 6500-7500 mile range.

As for the filter, just be aware of a potential problem with Purolator with media tears.

I rarely use OEM filters these days and I don't plan on changing that anytime soon. Currently using M1 for two OCIs and have Wix XP and Fram Ultra in my stash which I plan on using for 2 OCIs also.

Follow sir1900's advice. A good oil and filter combo like he uses should be more than sufficient on that engine. I plan to use Pennzoil Ultra and Bosch D+ or Fram Ultra for 2 OCIs in my Ridgeline on my next OCI.

I am following the OLM! Since I do a lot of stop and go driving, my change oil light came on at 5220 miles, so I probably cant stretch it out to 7000 miles or my percentage would be down to 0% in my Civic.

So are you saying that a better quality filter than the Honda OEM may be beneficial in extending the life on the engine over the long term?

With all the stop and go driving I do, I am not sure if I feel comfortable going to far past 5000 miles for oil changes.

I almost always take my monitor down to 0%. Averaging around 7k miles per OCI.

Ok, well if I took to down to 0%, than surely I can get to 7000 miles, I would think. But
doesn't Honda consider 0% to be "overdue"?
Again, the reason I like the 5000 OCI is I do the tire rotation at the same time, eliminating a another trip to the shop. Tire Rack actually recommends 3000-5000 mile rotations, NOT 7500 that some folks seem to do.

Civics are not picky about oil or the filter. I have used OE, Purolator Gold and classic, and Fram. No difference. But PP will keep that engine spotless.

I do 5000 OCIs in all my cars because of the heavy city driving.

I just like 5000 OCI's because I do the tire rotation all in one
visit. Also, 5000 miles for me is a little under 7 months, so really not a big deal as far as expense. Anything under 5000 miles really is a waste of money and unnecessary.

There is a guy on the Civic forum with a 2006 Civic LX (same R18 engine)with 1,000,000+ miles. Original motor went 640,000 miles before he swapped it out doing 20,000 O.C.I. using "whatever oil & filters were on sale"

20,000 OCI and the engine got to 1,000,000 miles?? The thing with the internet is anyone can say anything with no backup or proof.
I seriously doubt that story.
I mean really...come on. If this guy has a 2006, that means he would have been averaging 125,000 miles a year! Sorry, I don't buy it.
