2013 Cadillac CTS oil recommendation

It is a fact that a lot of these engines have early timing chain failures. It is also a fact that Dexos was created in part to deal with the early failures. Seems the original design used a wider chain, that got changed to a thinner one for some reason. Rather than change it back they came up with Dexos. If it works for that I do not know. Replacing the chain and tensioners is expensive.

Therefore, if I had one of these engines I would use Dexos oil. It is a free world use what you want. This engine has been completely redesigned for 2017 hope they did not repeat the mistakes. Until then I avoid that engine.

If you have an engine that chews up chains, just use the OEM spec oil as approved as long as it's not an 0 or 5w20. Then add a can of Liqui Moly Ceratec to beef up the anti wear additives. Chains don't like thin oil so if the CAFE regs have listed an Xw20, just move up to an 0 or 5w30.

Cadillacs, at least this one, have never been listed as 20Ws. Historically they called for Mobil 1 10w30, then 5w30 M1, now they've gone to the Dexos 5w30 spec...

Back on topic and since I spoke with a Mobil tech; decided to go with Mobil 1 5w30 and AC cartridge filter
