These 2.4 hybrids seem to be abundantly available for $1500 or so but many have issues with stalling at stops and high miles -150k+.
They usually say they need a new hybrid alternator.
How likely is it to get GM to cover this under the recall?
How likely is just throwing the part at this to actually fix it?
Once they start stalling isn’t it usually a combination of problems including oil consumption, compression, plugged egr, and the hybrid control module.
With clean sheet metal it’s tempting, many decades ago my father bought a clapped out 4 banger car (the 4 cylinders were always failed) and the mechanic was able to drop in a full v6 motor and transmission with everything left bolted together then wired it up relatively cheaply.
Not sure if that’s possible now that everything is bespoke and disposable.
It’s unfortunately a car with a very cheaply built very...I guess it's worth a gamble if it runs and drives even for 5k miles if it's 1500 bucks. That ac problem could be as easy as a pressure switch or schrader valve. I've seen someone drive for over a year without ac when they could have just jumped the low side switch with a paper clip which I did when I rode with him after first jumping the relay to check the compressor and getting cold air and he was so upset he didn't try to do anything. He assumed it'd be super expensive just to even get a diagnosis and didn't bother.
