Was just wondering if changing to a Purolator Boss or One oil filter would help cut out the VTC noise at cold start up. Purolator Boss has the anti-flow back might help?

Thanks!

any filter specified for that motor will have an anti drain back valve. sometimes they get damaged in manufacturing or if nitrile rubber, they can get stiff in service. when looking for a new filter, look for a colored (normally red) anti drain back valve. purolator and fram attached for reference.

adbv should help build up the oil pressure slightly quicker. You might play around w/different viscosity but you may have to replace some parts if you want to try removing some noise but no guarantees.

What filter is used now? Does it have a silicone ADBV? Some VTC systems will bleed down if the car sits long enough, even if the oil filter ADBV works correctly. Is VTC start-up noise a common reported thing with that engine?

It is, but it's usually caused by extended OCI's (and is common on several DI/turbo applications including Civic, CRV, Accord, Fit etc.).

The correct way to address the issue would be with replacement of timing components and shortening OCI's. As previously mentioned, most filters already have the ADBV, so that's not really the issue.

More likely than not you need a new vtc gear
Or replace the springs in that VTC system, if it's like the VTC system in the 9th generation K-engines. Could also be the Timing chain tensioner if it's the same as in the 9th gen K-engines. I wouldn't expect an oil to fix a mechanical problem. Now, if your engine has some gunk in a passageway or on an internal screen filter that could be cleaned and therefore allow better oil flow...then, yes, oil can fix that kind of problem.

If it is VTC noise, unlikely any adbv in the filter will help. Considering year of Accord, imo most likely VTC actuator needs replacement. The timing chain tensioner can also be the source of the noise, but on a 2012, actuator seems more likely. Later years (2013-14+) 2.4L, tensioner alone more a possibility.

No filter is going to help either of the issues.
