I was awfully close to buying a Forester last September. The seats were a deal breaker. Just not as comfortable as the Outback.

When my wife bought her Camry last February,we looked at CR-Vs. Sitting in one was as far as my wife got. Just didn't do anything for her. I actually drove a CR-V before I bought my Outback. Too much road noise in the CR-V IMO.

I would have rather bought an Outback but the wife really liked(like most females) the CR-V and it is her vehicle.

Thank you all for all the helpful advice and input, its nice to get opinions and ideas from other gearheads/regular joe's.
My wife tested the outback just to make me happy, liked the interior but cannot get past the fact that its still a wagon.
We are still debating back and forth about the forester vs Crv. To settle it, we decided to see if the dealers would let us keep the car overnight, so that we can really get a proper feel.
Subaru said perfectly fine, honda is reluctant and they can barely keep the new CRV on the lot since they are selling before they even arrive to the showroom. I need to keep pressing the honda salesman to see if we can make this happen.
My purchase timeline is mid-march, so once the choice is made, I will post pictures!

In TX, you don't need AWD.

It will just add weight, and reduce mpg's.

The CR-V will do much better for you.

She doesn't consider the Forester a wagon?

Of course its relevant to other Honda vehicles, its their flagship product. If the quality sucks in it then what's the rest of the line up like?

No uninformed ramblings here, i have worked on a lot of these things. Look at my Honda threads from last year.
Or do you call multiple transmissions, racks and pumps, door failure, screen failure all before 100k a quality car?
I sure don't!
No offence but taking the interior out doesn't give you much of a perspective on quality.
Tear the mechanisms apart and rebuild it then post.

A co-worker just bought a 2012 CR-V, mostly upon him liking mine so much. They went in to buy a used 2010 that the local dealer had on the lot, but they liked the interior of the 2012 better. Theirs is an Urban Titanium EX model with the tan interior...looks real nice. They did get the AWD model also.

I've driven the 2012 model, two of them actually, and they drive real nice. Like most Hondas, they just have an easy way about them. The steering is light and quick, but relatively communicative, the ride is taut but still comfortable, and the interior is well laid-out. It's not the biggest compact SUV out there, but I think that shows in how it drives and in the fuel economy it gets. I like driving our CR-V better than our MDX; with Michelin Latitude Tour tires on it, it's nearly as quiet inside as well (tires make a big difference in the noise on this vehicle).

I would press your Honda dealer hard to let you take one home overnight. They do know that often makes or breaks a deal. Tell them that you're also looking at the Forester and Subaru let you take one of them. Heck SHOW UP to the Honda dealer IN the Subaru...that'd be funny.

The new one was rumored to have a new K25 engine, but that hasn't happened. I believe I've read that the K25 engine is direct-injected, and the 2012 CR-V came out just a hair too early to use this engine, and that the 2013 model may have it. I don't know for sure.

I like the 5-speed transmission. I've owned a car with a 6-speed auto and it's a lot of shifting. To me, the current 5-speed has a near-perfect gear spread. RPM on the interstate at 75 mph is about 2,400 RPM, so it's not strung-out at all. Either way, the engine is plenty willing to rev, and it accelerates well. I think the current ones are in the 8.5 second range to 60. Dad's old 1996 V-8 Grand Cherokee did 8.5 seconds to 60, and that was "fast" for an SUV. Driving around in my low-by-comparison 166 horsepower model, I rarely want for more power. It will settle into a light cruise at 50 MPH and about 1,500 RPM, or it'll willingly rev to redline to accelerate more briskly. It's a pretty flexible engine, happy to do whatever you ask of it.

The CR-V has actually never been afflicted with these problems. The transmissions have been solid in them since they came out in the late '90s. I browse multiple CR-V owners forums out there and there is never a mention of a transmission issue. If the transmissions are bad, you'd see it first on an owners forum.

I had this choice in 2000. I went with the wife. Happy wife, Happy Life. Our CRV has 162,000 miles and no real problems. Oh yeah, neither does my Honda Odyssey which only has a little over 100,000 but clearly I am the only Honda owner to have 2 quality products. I do over-maintain both of them as well.

What do you think the CRV and outback are? Trucks? Humvees?

No, they are cars designed to dupe the population into thinking they are rugged. But they are just station wagons on more vertical bodies. Just like mom's back in 1967.

Funny because on Sunday night I gave a friend a ride back from the Honda dealer due to his CRV going in on recall for the transmission.

Sure, its a recall, but there must have been a looming massive issue for that to be the case.

I know you said your wife had a bad experience with Chevy, but still I'd take her to go look at an equinox. There is no harm in doing so, just tell her it has the most backseat room, and the quietest ride in it's class (both of which are true).

Again, I stated my opinion before, of the two, go for the Subaru.

My wife was leary of the Chrysler, but her back was killing her putting our kid in a backward facing car seat in the back of her Eclipse. So she drove it and liked it.
It's been paid off for awhile. She has not mentioned any desire to get anything else....except for maybe a grumble or two about missing her 3rd gen Eclipse GT when she sees a nice clean one.

Like the above poster said, No harm in checking it out. She might already have her mind made up and she would hate it no matter what, even if it was quieter than a Lexus LS and got better gas mileage than a Prius. But if she's not careful, she might accidently like it.

I'm sure lots of people have good ones but my brothers sees severe service, the car has not held up by any stretch of the imagination.

The GMC Yukon Denali XL they have is older by 3 yrs and is run harder than the Honda, and has been a fantastic vehicle with zero major component failures.
In fact it has never let them down on the road. With that Honda you better not leave home without a cell phone.
Ask him if a Honda is ever in the cards again, never but another GM is an absolute.

Like i said i don't want to offend the Honda fans but the fact is if you spend as many hours under this thing swearing like a sailor as i have you might just a different opinion.

C'mon, the CR-V has been the best selling vehicle in it's class for years. It's a great vehicle.
I still would rather have an Outback (I like the look and AWD system more)for the wife but the CR-V is a fantastic vehicle.

I can go on any,any vehicle forum and find owners with issues with that particular vehicle.

C'mon nothing, thats my opinion. If you think its so great thats yours.

CRV has been the best selling because of sheeple and it's rather boring-looking and 'dependable' etc ...

A Forester has a ton more personality, exclusivity and class, IMO.

As good as Honda vehicles are I won't own one. I had deal with customers threatening me when their V6 Accord or Odyssey transmissions blew up and they didn't an extended warranty. Our dealership wanted over $5,000 to replace an Odyssey Transmission in 2003 when I left there. Every brand has their problems.
