Greetings from Texas!

Just about to hit 1K miles on my 2011 Mustang, and now looking for a motor oil.

I've used Amsoil Marine/Diesel in my 7.3L Excursion (10-12K OCI with a 5K filter swap/UOA) with good results, so I figure that I'll look at Amsoil to see if I can find a suitable oil for the 'stang.

Car is a 3-4 times a week driver. I tend to have a heavy foot.

Searched and still don't know the difference between Amsoil SSO and XL. Appreciate any hints on that (I don't care a whole lot about the couple of bucks difference in price). If there's another oil that makes more sense for this powerplant, I'd appreciate a recommendation.

Thank you.

I was thinking 10K miles or so. Though I'll track it some and during that kind of use the OCI will be much shorter.

FoMoCo recommends a 5W-20, for whatever that's worth.

I'm envious but I'm so attached to my 06 Mustang GT that I am going to keep it. If I had your car I'd use Pennzoil Platimum 5W20 with Motorcraft filter and keep your OCI's a bit shorter for a while, 5k to 7.5k.

Amsoil makes a great 20 weight group IV oil that has proven itself to go 10k easily, it's called ASM. XL will prolly go that long, but there is no doubt about the ASM product.

Howdy Yaal,
SSO is a ester/pao mix with the best additives you can buy. XL is a group III synthetic that has been formulated to meet the API/Donunt qualifications and is formulated with Luberzols best additives. I heard that FoMoCo is going to a 7.5K OCI so if you want to stay with that OCI I would go with either the XL or OE group III donut oils and stay with that until the warranty is expired. If you want the best Amsoil formulation oil, I woul use the SSO for 12-15K with the Eao oil filter for the complete OCI. I would also use the Eao oil filter for the whold 12-15K on your 7.3 engine.

+1 Go with the Donut my brother, XL is Awesome and you get the API cert. All Amsoil lubes are excellent so it is really up to you.

Uh... Is Amsoil correct in stating that the 2011 Mustang has an 8.1 quart sump?

My car's 4.5 quart sump suddenly feels very inadequate.

Yeah, it's a big sump. I've read that's partly to support 10K OCI.

[censored] of a car all around. I've got an SCT performance tuner and a cold air intake coming next week, which should get me 20-30 extra HP and about the same torque.

As someone who just placed an order for one after driving my cousin's '11, I have to strongly advise against driving one if you intend on staying attached to your '06. Night and Day difference. I'm saying that coming from a '10 GT. Just sayin'.

As for the oil, I'm going to give the Amsoil XL a shot, with Amsoil's filter. I ordered mine last week so I won't be seeing it for a few months, but my F150 has a 4.6 and I'm using XL 5-20 with an EO filter and everything looks good. I'm early in my first run of it, but I'm partial to Amsoil so I have no worries about it in my stang once I break it in.

Use the XL until the engine is broken-in, there are a bunch of sealers and casting metals that won't get fully removed from the engine so run that for a while and consider stepping up to the full synthetic after a few OCs with the XL.
