Hello all,

Here is my 3rd UOA on my vehicle.

Vehicle Info:

Year and Model: 2011 Mazda6 with 6spd MT
Engine: 2.5L 4cyl MZR N/A (NOT direct injected, NOT skyactiv). (No Oil Life Monitor) (API SN 0w20 Spec'd at 5,000/7,500mile severe/non-severe service)
Previous Oil: Pennzoil Platinum API SN 0w20 (non pure plus)
UOA Oil: Pennzoil Platinum API SN 0w20 (non pure plus)
UOA Oil Filter: Purolator PureOne PL10241
Miles on Oil: 9,022
Makeup oil: 0.80-1.0 qt Kendall GT-1 0w20 (I did add 0.5 qts during road trip toward end of OCI which would explain high TBN - 12 hours of driving at 75mph consumed a little oil).

Service Conditions: 7 months, 80/20% highway/city, winter conditions (single digit temperatures for 3-4 months straight), typically no warm-up for morning commute, 1,750 mile road trip south to escape winter, periods of long idling to thaw ice and snow.

Previous UOAs:

1st UOA @ 9,885 vehicle miles: Mobil 1 0w20 API SN (first use of Mobil 1 after FF drain)
2nd UOA @ 40,465 vehicle miles: Kendall GT-1 Synthetic 0w20 API SN (third consecutive use of Kendall GT-1)

My comments:

Does anybody see any issues with me doing a yearly OCI for ~15k miles? Do I even need to really use a synthetic? Am I just pouring money away? Trust me when I saw this is the most brutal winter I've ever seen temperature wise - and the oil held up fine. It seems this motor will run on anything. Dnewton - time to switch to Supertech dino?

Latest fill:

Oil: Castrol Edge Syntec 0w20
Oil Filter: FRAM TG3614

Thanks for looking and comments are appreciated. Any questions please ask!

As long as the driving conditions don't change I would continue to use synthetic oil and extend the OCI by perhaps 2 months. Stick with synthetic oil to cope with the cold winters. You can't buy a 0W20 dino oil and Supertech synthetic would be fine.

The demands you are placing on the oil are mild.
Including:

A good engine.
Adding a little oil now and then.
Few short trips.
Many highway miles.
