So i changed the oil to valvoline syn power 5w30 w/motocraft filter when i got the truck, it has 38K on it now and 5K on the oil. how often do i need to change the oil? i've seen 3K miles and i've seen 10K, it's a 4.0 V6. and what about the trans and tcases.? it didn't come with an owners manual,
thoughts....

It depends on how it's driven....all highway miles would probably make 10K doable....all city miles would make 5K more reasonable....a mix of both would probably make 7500 miles sensible. This is based on using a synthetic like Synpower...if using a dino like Valvoline conventional I'd cut those numbers back a bit.

i should add some info, it idles about 10-15 min every morning here when it's cold, yes it snows in AZ, then is driven 10-12 miles freeway to job and shut off. a few short trips during the week, never driven on the weekends.

Thank you for the info.

Pretty excessive IMHO if you are trying to 'warm it up'; probably diluting the oil with a lot of gas since you are extending the time the engine is in warm up mode.

It is regularly 15F to 30F here in the winter and my DD doesn't get more than 2 minutes run time before heading off.

Here is a extended discussing on boths sides

The only time I would be idling a lot is to clean the car off of snow; no way it would be even 10 minutes for me.
